I might have my wife talked into letting me purchase a Yoder 480. She's bulking at the cost over the Silverbac I am also considering. My question is... how important is the 2-piece diffuser? What are the benefits? Are the benefits worth the extra $189?

My Yoder is supposed to be arriving tomorrow according to FedEx. I purchased the two piece diffuser for the ability to cook directly over the fire. It would allow you to sear your steaks, get good grill marks, etc. Everyone that I have spoken with here highly recommends it as a must have. I bought GrillGrates too and will try to use both this weekend and post pics.

The two piece diffuser is the same price whether you buy it now or later, so it doesn't hurt to wait. It does make it easier to clean out the firepot. I am saving up for a YS640 right now, and plan to wait on the diffuser.
To hold the price down (for now), I would wait on the diffuser and get a generic cover.
I would also point out the warranty differences. The Yoder has a 10 year warranty on the body.

Hi PWB0108!
I bought the Yoder YS640 earlier this summer and I am really loving it, I am turning out the best Q that I have ever done.
Here are my thoughts: I bought the 2 piece diffuser mainly for the convenience of cleaning out the fire box ashes, which must be done after ever cook, otherwise you have to lift out the 1 piece diffuser and it is a little heavy and a bit of a pain in the arse, so for me it is definitely worth it. If I were you I would wait and get it later and spend the saved money and buy the YS640 for a couple of hundred dollars more than the 480, the extra space is really worth it!!
I also bought the Yoder cover and it is really x'lent quality and really sheds the rain, best custom cover that I have ever bought! If your Yoder is going to be exposed to the rain I would really recommend it.
Hope this helps in your decision making!! Cheers!!!!...

Thanks everyone. All good advice. I'm picking up my Yoder tomorrow morning. I'm leaning toward the 640 over the 480. I'm going to wait to get the 2-piece diffuser. Hopefully doing my first cook tomorrow evening/Monday morning. Any advice for tips setting up or using this smoker? I've been told to wrap the diffuser in foil.

I didn’t think I’d use my 640 for searing either as I have a nice gasser and three charcoal grills. I did it once for fun and I’m sold. Works great and I think you’ll be pleAsed. It really does help with cleanup of burn pot too

I am also joining the YS640 club. Placed my order, waiting for delivery in a few days. I bought the two peice diffuser and the grill grates kit. Waiting on the cover, will use a generic one for now. Can hardly wait—this is gonna be fun!

Sorry to revive an old thread. I ordered a 480 a couple days ago and it will be here Monday. I can't wait.
For the guys that have Grill Grates, do you leave them on all the time or only if you're grilling. I replaced the grates on my gas grill with them and I love them but it seems like they would limit the amount of smoke.
Thanks

I only put the grill grates in when I need them for searing. Most of the time I use the standard grates when straight smoking. Not sure if it would affect the smoke too much if you left them in as there is still a space below the grates and above the open fire box, and my chamber at least, always fills up with smoke.
