Hello everyone! I'm looking to purchase a GMG Daniel Boone this week and wondering if I need to spend extra $$$ to get the WiFi model or not. I've seen previous posts where others have commented saying they like to be able to monitor the grill temp and meat with the 1 probe, but if I have the Maverick XR-50, do I really need the Wi-Fi addition? Also, some say the grill temp and meat probe aren't that accurate on the GMG app? Some also say they like the firmware updates, but again, is that really needed now with a good grill/meat probe? I understand there may be additional updates coming from GMG in the future for the app, so any additional insight would be greatly appreciated so I can purchase my grill this week. Thanks!

Original Weber 22" kettle (1978 model!)

Original Fireboard
Thermapen MK4
I've had a GMG DB for over a year, and I don't have the wi-fi. I use a Fireboard to monitor the temps of the cooker and the meats. I've found the pit temp probe on my DB is typically 25 or so degrees off at the normal cooking temps. I rely on the Fireboard probe and set the DB 15-25 degrees "high" to reach the temps I want. You'll be able to do the same with the XR-50. Just do a test run with your DB at various temps and record the differences between your XR and the DB setting. BTW, I've never used the meat probe that comes with the DB.

- If not cooking outdoors, I am cooking on the stovetop with my 14" carbon steel wok, 12" CI skillet, or in the oven with my two Lodge CI pizza pans, or two dutch ovens. I've also got a nifty Lodge carbon steel grill pan that rocks for veggies outdoors.
WiFi is useful if you want to be able to control the smoker when away from home. Example - brisket reaches 203F in the flat while you are at church/work/whatever. Use the app to drop smoker temp to 170F to hold the meat until you get home. No cambro needed.
