I just acquired a new Traeger Timberline 850 a couple of months ago and I have used it about 5 times or so to smoke various meats. I have used hickory, apple, oak and a gourmet blend (maple, hickory and cherry wood) pellets. In all cases VERY LITTLE smoke was seen coming out of the smoker, including when the grill door is open. This is when using the Super Smoke mode as well. Although I find this very strange the meats I have smoked have turned out tasty and all have had a decent smoke ring. I don't understand how this can be, but I am used to using a wood/charcoal fired smoker, and of course there is plenty of visual smoke with this type of machine. At times I have wanted to increase the smoke intensity and flavor of the meats but Super Smoke is the only "tool" available on this machine. I have checked several times with Traeger Customer Service and they say this is "normal". I'm not convinced that it is normal since there has to be smoke produced when wood is burned (whether it is sticks or pellets), and the lack of visible smoke with this machine is both puzzling, and frankly, disappointing, especially not being able to control the amount of smoke the meat is exposed to.
Has anyone else had this issue with a pellet smoker? Does anyone have any thoughts on why this condition exists? Thank you in advance for your thoughts and advice.
