As I posted earlier about my SG getting swamped. What do you do about rain. I dont feel comfortable smoking inside my garage. With my old gas grill I could cook in any weather.

Hi, my name is Darrell. I'm an OTR truck driver for over 25 years. During my off time I love doing backyard cooks. I have a 48" Lang Deluxe smoker, Rec-Tec pellet smoker,1 Weber Genesis 330, 1 Weber Performer (blue), 2 Weber kettles (1 black and 1 Copper), 1 26" Weber kettle, a WSM, 8 Maverick Redi Chek thermometers, a PartyQ, 2 SnS, Grill Grates, Cast Iron grates, 1 ThermoPop (orange) and 2 ThermoPens (pink and orange) and planning on adding more cooking accessories. Now I have an Anova sous vide, the Dragon blower and 2 Chef alarms from Thermoworks.

As long as you don't let the pellets inside the hopper get wet, you should be fine. I actually prefer using my MAK 1 Star over my other pits when its raining because it is "set it & forget it" allowing me to go back inside & stay dry while my food cooks.

I've used mine when the rain was pouring, and in heavy wet snowfalls. This is on an exposed patio so the cooker is getting the full brunt of the weather. The lid of my pellet hopper overhangs the edges of the hopper by a few inches so the water is just dripping off the lid without contacting the controller. If it's windy or the rain's coming at an angle I have placed a 30" or so square piece of particle board on the hopper lid to give it more overhang. Keep the pellets dry and you will be fine.

I don't use or leave mine open to the elements, just leave a few pellets in the rain to know why. Plus electronics just don't appreciate that kind of weather.

Dr ROK. Agree, the chimney could be rotated. However, I wanted to make sure the smoke did not get caught up under the patio ceiling which is part of the house's roof. Did not want smoke possibly getting into the house from the attic. If it were just a regular patio cover, that would not be a problem.

I use mine during snow and rainstorms, I just cover my pellet hopper/controller w/ a welding blanket at the moment, but soon will be building coverage for summer/spring and bought a poly tunnel for wintertime.

Backyard Jambo, T1000 Woodmaster, MAK 2 star, 14" & 22" WSM, 2x 22" Weber Kettle, Stoven, Hot Box Grill, Hasty Bake Ranger, RecTeq Bullseye, GMG Davy Crockett; Original Grilla and others I'm not remembering!
Cooked a contest in the rain on Saturday! It wasn't the rain that gave me fits, it was the wind. I kept a Gorilla Garbage bag over the hopper, which blocked the electronics from the wet. Got some "meltage" on the firebox door, but it should scrape off. This pellet-fire system is home made and not as well insulated as commercial ones. I move a patio umbrella over my Grilla to cook in the rain.

I have cooked once in the rain. I did put a 10x10 over the cooker to keep it and myself dry when i was checking on things. I leave the cover on it when i'm not using the cooker.
