The build quality of Yoders is insanely good and heavy duty! The only cooker that I have encountered that rivals that build quality is the MAK but I don't think the price different warrants it. Unless you're in CA, I saw a mak 1 star for sale on a different forum in the ventura area for $1000. I think you'll find the yoder will be worth the extra cash. Another one I like that's not quite as heavy duty but still nice is sawtooth pellet grills.

It seems like the majority leans to the Yoder. I was leaning that way myself but wanted to get the peoples' opinion. I am looking for something well built and will stay with me for a long time. Thank you all for your opinions.

I will take many pics of my first smoke when I get the Yoder.

You will be very happy with your decision. We look forward to seeing your future cooks.

The only thing I would add to this one would be to go with the YS640. You will want the extra space, at some point. For $200 extra, I would take that upgrade.

That is why I went from the 480 to the 640. Like everyone says: Nobody every says I wish I had gotten the smaller one. At the same time, I rarely used the entire space of the 640. 3-5 racks of ribs, 4 butts or 2 brisket packers will easily fit on the 480. If money is an issue, I would spend the extra $200 on the two piece diffuser ($169). Makes cleaning the ash so much easier.

Even if I rarely used the extra space, I would still get the 640 over a 480. If I was saving up for the grill, I would save a little bit longer and get the diffuser and the 640. jlazar

What do you have currently and how new are you to BBQ/smoking?

Either pellet smoker will be a great choice (and sounds like you've maybe purchased already). However I will be that guy who says personally I think if this is your first cooker and you're new to this, you should start with a weber kettle 22" w/ a slow n sear. You can always add the $1500 pellet smoker later but I don't think anyone has ever regretted having a weber kettle around, esp given they are comparatively cheap and don't take up much space.
