Can I store a pellet smoker outside?

really interested in buying a pellet smoker, but I live in South Florida. Things rust and corrode here so quickly it's crazy. I'm concerned a pellet smoker will not hold up.

any southerners had durability issues with their pellet grills?

    thanks,
    T

    As opposed to the garage?

I live on the opposite end of the country (Minnesota) and about 180 degrees from the climate in FL, so when it comes to grills, I really don't need to worry about corrosion. (Unless your talking vehicles, then we have a massive corrosion problem with all the salt the DOT uses to fight the ice in the winter months.)

It might help to let us know what pellet smoker you are looking at. Some are built better than others, some have more external protection form the elements and some offer different and better options for storing outside. The higher end models will be your best bet as they are usually built with more robust, corrosion resistant materials. They will generally offer better covers and have better support.

I live 100 yards from the bay that feeds into the gulf in NW Florida. All of my smokers and grills live outside.. some under canopies, some under umbrellas, and some with no covering. Due diligence with cleaning and usage solves most issues. My pellet pooper is a RecTec 680 with the Cold smoker. I have the cover for it but I rarely put it on being that it is under a canopy. No issues on this end of the state.

In a humid or damp climate, look for one that has an easy clean out of the pellet hopper as you won't want to leave pellets in it between cooks.

Hmm... I am doing it wrong then. I toss 40 pounds in at a time and it gets emptied the old fashioned way... The flame eats them.

FlaBouy, I think you've been lucky! Pellets absorb moisture and when they do they swell up and can jam an auger. Not fun to fix!

Mine has sat through several hurricanes, tropical storms, and Florida afternoon rain showers with no issues to date (Over two years). Besides, pulling the auger on a RecTec is about 4 minutes at most... not even enough time to drink a full beer.

Hmmmm. Thanks for the info. Had some temp troubles recently with my GMG after being away for 2 months. Never thought about ruined pellets!

I have had the RecTec 680 for 3 years and as some of know I’m away from home 3-4 weeks at a time due to my job. I have never empty the hopper in that three year period and never had a problem so far but I do keep a cover on it plus it stays under a shelter.

I have a cheap one, the Myron Mixon Pitmaster Q3 - have had it outside across the street from the Chesapeake Bay for the last year. Keep it clean, and I'm not seeing any of the tell tale signs of corrosion.

I've seen a few horror stories on here about chipping out gummed up pellets. I've been rolling the dice and winning so far.

I've heard them too. I left mine outside with pellets in it all summer (with it's cover on, and also under a gazebo) with our 70+% humidity, thunderstorms, rain, etc. No gummed up pellets this year...

Thanks everyone! I'm looking at the Camp Chef that's got the Gold Nedal for value, forget the model. It's about $800-$1,000.
I would be keeping mine outside, under an awning, close to the pool. Seems like it's a go as long as it's got a cover. To be clear, I don't anticoitate it every getting wet from direct rain. Just rust n rot from the humidity.
fir context, my PBC (newer version) started rusting in about 2 weeks

I've had my Camp Chef for about a month now. After the first two cooks I cleaned out the hopper each time, including the auger tube. With the last cook, about two weeks ago I cleaned out the hopper, but left the auger tube alone -- so the pellets will start to feed right away when I add fresh pellets to the hopper. I keep my Woodwind in the lanai, covered with a fitted cover.

I don't think corrosion can be completely avoided. But if you spend a bit more on stainless steel you can reduce it.

Some of my pellet grills live outside, some in the garage. The Yoder Cimarron stays out in the weather, hopper empty. The WoodMaster Mini Hog lives outdoors under cover with pellets in hopper, but the hopper is really tight. MAK 2 star and FEC100 live in garage, pellets in hopper. The under-cover Grilla is under a solid patio at work with no pellets in hopper. My next grill is a Green Mountain Daniel Boone with pizza oven and it will live out on the new patio in the weather under cover. The patio is being formed today, maybe concrete tomorrow! That means GMG in the very near future!

Awesome. I really like my Daniel Boone, although I couldn't recommend the wifi (yet).

I live in SE Texas where humidity is a problem. All my smokers live under the carport and do just fine. If you plan on storing them outside invest in a good cover.
