    The Power Mountain Story

My post this morning about the issues I had getting a brisket on the fire sparked a bit interested in my pellet fired WMS so I thought Id give a little background on how that cooker came to be.

Back in 2015 I was really interested in getting into pellets. I wanted to get my head around all the buzz. I really didn't want to invest in a stock pelet rig. I really wanted to build a cabinet pellet rig from an old refrigerator. I still do want to build that rig and someday I'm sure I will.

I poked around a bit. Found that Smoke Daddy had everything I needed to convert a WSM to pellets. Or a drum, or an old Volkswagon for that matter. The big barrier for me was cost. It was just a whole lot of cash. Not the same cash as a new stock Pellet rig but a bit steep.

That same year i had the chance to meet Powersmoke_80. We had both signed up for the same KCBS Judging Class. Dean (Powersmoke_80) is an extremely talented machinist. He's also knows pellet assemblies, controllers, fuels. He is a wealth of knowledge on all things pellet fired. Not just the pretty. The nuts and bolts. How they work.

A talked with dean. He gave me all sorts of knowledge. Got me comfortable with assembles, Just all kinds of great info.

So one day dean sent me a text. A place near us had a Camp Chef Pro SE brand new. 199.00. I grabbed it. I smart person just would have taken that Camp Chef and Cooked with it right? Well obviously that not me.

Once I got the Camp Chef I took it apart and got the hopper assemble off. I attempt to make the adapter ring from a 55 gallon barrel. A 30 gal barrel would have worked great but I just couldn't get my hands on one. I bite the bullet and got the stuff from Smoke Daddy. Ordered up some pellets from BBQers Delight and the rest is history.

Big thanks to Dean for all the help and support in this and many of my cooking projects. Just another reason to love the pit!

The first test fire of the hopper. Feb 2016 That is the RTD probe there across the fire pot are. I believe thats the cause of my fail today.

Thanks for the recap Jon Solberg ! I had forgot about how the whole shebang came together. The first thing that comes to my mind when looking at the last pic, how stable is that setup in the wind? With my luck it would topple over from an unexpected gust of 25+mph.

BTW - It is good to see you active in The Pit again!

Its a boat anchor. That things not going anywhere. The hopper is in the 45 lbs range dry.

Great story Jon! I’ve got a friend who got the Smoke Daddy setup, but he’s had controller issues. Glad you figured what getting yours to head off the reservation!

Very, very nice! I've got a 22" pellet fire which was designed for a Weber kettle. I've used it frequently on the WSM, but the hopper is seriously small. Plus it's L-M-H for controls. Yours is lots better!

So I'm still a little confused (a state I remain in), was the actual ring assembly purchased from Smoke Daddy? I see their 12" hopper for sale with everything but the actual ring and means of attachment. I emailed them to see if they could answer that question as well.

Good luck with the refrigerator idea, seems Smoke Daddy can help there as well.

yes, The ring was purchased from Smoke Daddy in 2016.

I've been just witing for the right fridge to happen by and I'll be on that like a rat on a cheeto. I got a few years of research in that fridge project but hey its low and slow right?
