How hot can you get your Traeger in Smoke Mode?

I replaced the LMH controller on my Traeger with the Ortech T-100 digital controller. I want to achieve a 225 temperature in smoke mode. I preheated the grill with controller set to 225 degrees then switched to smoke mode at P-2 setting. Temperature began to fall and didn't recover even when I switched the P settings to 1 and then 0. Are other people able to achieve a 225 temperature in Smoke mode? I am thinking the firing sequence may be the reason and I should pre-heat the grill starting with Smoke mode instead with cooking mode. At the time the outside temperature was 75 degrees but windy.

    Hey Lance,

Traeger service support is quite good.

    Give them a call.

I upgraded to the Traeger digital pro controller and it has a setting for 225 that is pretty consistent. If you call Traeger support ask them about it.

I was never able to get more than about 180F in Smoke mode. The 225F setting did stay pretty consistent.

I have a pro controller and smoke mode runs at 180. The 225 setting is pretty consistent and gives me good smoke.

CaptainMike kmhfive Greasy that is probably what's best to keep grill at 225 degrees and still get ample amount of smoke. I am making the assumption that you can get more smoke in smoke mode because of the constant augur interval rate and with the P-setting dialed in a user could hold the temperature at 225 degrees. Perhaps it was never the manufacture's intention to achieve hotter temperatures in smoke mode.

I shall call both Traeger and Ortech support to see what their take is.

Let us know your results. The new Pro controller does not have an adjustable p setting. I think it's because of the better algorithm of the controller.

I used to set it on smoke for the first hour or so to get it going while the meat was cold and the turn it up to 225F after I saw the temperature getting above 100-110F. That seemed to work out ok.

I also just upgraded to the Traeger pro Controller and have consistently hit within 2 degrees (+/-) of my target temp at every setting. I think it made a huge difference...
