I looked pretty hard at one in Topeka a couple of weeks ago, but SWMBO reminded me that my next MCS was a WSCGC, so I got a red light.
It it looks like a reasonable price for a small pellet grill.

I picked one up from Gander Mountain during the liquidation sales for $279. I've smoked all of the following on it: Pork Ribs, Brisket (flat), Spatchcocked Chicken, Pork Belly, and Turkey Breast. I've grilled pizzas, steaks, burgers, sausages, dogs, vegetables, etc.
Things I like about it: The cast iron grates. If you preheat a good bit (I can get it to just shy of 500 deg max) - you can get a good sear with the cast iron grates. The fact that it's a pellet grill. The construction - even though Chinese made, it seemed to be a step above what I'm used to from Big Box Stores. Nothing to write home about, just better than I expected.
Things I don't like about it: The hopper size. Holds maybe 15 lbs of pellets or so. The vertical space. I didn't think I'd notice based on what I normally cook, but now we're thinking about doing a full turkey for Thanksgiving - and I will probably have to spatchcock it.
That's about it. I would sum it up as a grill that doesn't really stand out one way or the other. If you do get it - spray the inside of the hopper down with food grade silicone before you use it the first time.

Agreed. I bought it because it was a cheap entry into the pellet cooking world. Couldn't justify some of the prices of other grills, because "what if I don't like it."Originally posted by Troutman View PostCheap usually means cheap parts. Chinese made throws up a BIG flag. Oh well good luck, Mixon put his name on it so it can't be too bad.
This one has served it's purpose. Once it rusts out/auger seizes/controller fries/whatever, I'm looking towards a RecTec...

So the controller broke last week. The knob no longer clicks to "off" to blow out the fire, just goes right on past to high. Did a little research - and it's time to eat crow. I'm not ready to buy a RecTec just yet - at least this close to Christmas (and I think my wife would kill me!)Originally posted by phrogpilot73 View PostThis one has served it's purpose. After looking inside at the wiring of the controller, looking at wiring diagrams, and measuring some holes - looks like a Pellet Pro PID controller will fit (although I have to shave off 1/16" of an inch from the metal on either side of the opening, and the wiring will work. I can't figure out if the auger motor is 2 RPM, or if the fan is 3000 RPM - so I've got those on my eBay watch list in case I need to order them.
Out of curiosity - any one know why Smoke Daddy sells all the parts (PID controller, auger motor, fan) cheaper on his eBay store than on his website or Amazon? After reading the article about counterfeiters - I thought maybe whoever was selling the parts on eBay was a counterfeiter, then I went to his eBay ratings from his main website - and sure enough, it was the same seller... The auger motor/fan were only $5 cheaper, but the PID controller was $15 cheaper than his website, and $35 cheaper than on Amazon...
All total, if I have to replace the auger motor and fan will be $514 (grill, PID controller, auger motor, fan). Not a bad deal...

Nice job!
I would still get it warranted so when you decide to get a different pellet grill or something you could put that one back to stock to recoup some money and still have your pellet pro for the next upgrade or sell separate. I did that with my Brinkmann Pellet grill after a melt down and I purchased a better controller while I waited a year to finally get the warranty one that was back ordered from china. I have been using the hopper assembly on other projects and will put it back to stock and sell that grill with all the new components that were replaced under warranty.
