I have a seven year old Recteq. It’s been flawless. The smoke profile is on the lighter side but that’s ok with us. Maybe not for your friend. BUT, a close friend bought one about 18 months ago and has had several problems with it. And he reports that the once stellar customer service has been severely lacking. I guess what I’m saying is that I wouldn’t but one today. When mine finally gives up the ghost, I will probably look at LSG or Yoder.

Agree with most of above. High end - LSG or Yoder. Mid range - Grilla Silverbac. I have owned both a Silverbac and a Yoder.

- If not cooking outdoors, I am cooking on the stovetop with my 14" carbon steel wok, 12" CI skillet, or in the oven with my two Lodge CI pizza pans, or two dutch ovens. I've also got a nifty Lodge carbon steel grill pan that rocks for veggies outdoors.
I don't have a Yoder, but have looked at them closely, and the friend who sold me his Performer Deluxe 10 years ago to make room for a Yoder YS640 still loves the Yoder and uses it constantly. He wanted to keep the kettle, but his wife told him 5 grills in their backyard was the limit, and he had to get rid of one before the Yoder was delivered.
I think it would be easier to acquire a Yoder than a Mak with their production issues, and it won't have a wait list like a LSG probably would. Grilla is probably under his budget, since it sounds like money is not an issue.
