Yes I have indirectly. When I bought my P&S I didn't opt for the trap door. I had the same reluctancy as you, grease getting down into the bottom of the unit or worse the fire pot. Besides I have other ways to sear so I didn't buy it. Since then I did some testing of a unit that's manufactured by Smoke Daddy called appropriately the Sear Daddy;

It works really well but you do have to set it up (which isn't hard but just an extra step) and it uses lava rocks to catch the grease (which isn't something I prefer to deal with either). All in all it works great regardless. So there are options out there.
