After a lot of searching and comparisons, I have finally joined the world of pellet grilling and got a Camp Chef Woodwind Pro 24 last night. Will assemble this weekend. Dick's Sporting Goods discounted them to $1,099 and I couldn't pass on that deal. I didn't want to go into the $2,000+ market (I'll wait for my first million). It was a tight battle with the Weber Searwood 600 XL, which is a very good grill, but the wood box to add smoke was the clincher for me as I do get a lot of flavored wood chunks that I'll want to add to boost the smoke.
So Camp Chef'ers, what brand of pellets consistently work the best for you on this grill?
Congratulations on the new cooker! Can't wait to see what you do with it.
On my DLX24, one of the early struggles was finding a pellet brand that worked well and would hold a relatively steady heat. I finally settled on Lumberjack and I'm still using them today on the LSG.
Congratulations! You're going to love the smoke profile you get from the Smoke Box. I've had my Woodwind Pro for close to 2 years now and love it compared to other pellet smokers I've used. Heck I like it so much my other smokers sit by jealously neglected. The pellets I get most consistent temps from are Lumberjack, Camp Chef brand, and Bear Mountain.
That’s great, welcome to the world of pellet cooking! I have a Grilla OF that I typically use Costco store brand Kirkland pellets in. That’s mainly for cost and I find that they work adequately. I’ve had satisfaction with the Knottywood, Bear mountain and lumberjack brands. I haven’t been convinced that they make that much of a difference. Lately I’ve been experimenting using a smoke tube with wood chips to add extra smoke flavor if the mood strikes. Last year I bought a Oklahoma Joe bronco which is my newest toy and find I use it when I want to have more fun, and I use the pellet grill for more routine cooks
I just remembered, I felt that pit boss brand did not work well. You can get those at Menards for a low price. I’ve used the Grilla brand with good results as well
I assembled it last night and hope to run my test tonight or tomorrow at the latest (Valentine’s Day lunch and movie with wife and our best friends). I took the old Akorn that couldn’t hold its heat anymore and the Member Mark charcoal/gas dual that has served me better than I ever thought it would to the dump. I thanked them for their service and kept the rectangle grates and the small center circle grate from the Akorn as mementos. As you can see, I have lots of space now.
