    Replacing Woodwind WiFi Controller

    Hey All,

I've got a Woodwind Pro and it's running way too hot. Like 100+ degrees too hot and the temp showing on the controller will swing by incredible amounts up and down in a way that cannot possibly be happening inside the barrel. So a couple questions for you all:

    1) Would you just replace the stick thermometer as well or just the controller?
    2) Is there a good source for the replacement controllers? I couldn't find one on the Camp Chef website.
    3) Is the retrofit the same thing as a replacement in this case?

    Thanks very much!

I am sure Camp Chef can provide them. I realize it is probably a pain because they don’t have a phone number easily available but I’d ask them first via email or chat. Your smoker may still be under warranty too.

Sorry, I do not have any info or insight to your issue. It’s your first post and wanted to say welcome to the Pit.

Thanks for the welcome! I'll try their chat bot on Monday — it was off all weekend — and hope they've got some ideas. It's finally getting to be grill season here in MN and I'd hate to miss out on too much of it.

A couple things you might try, if you haven't already.
            1) Clean the temperature probe.
            2) Check for a loose connection of the probe wire to the controller.

Camp Chef has always been very responsive, even with email conversations. Their customer service will be your best bet if you need any replacement parts.

Dwade Similar thing happened to mine. I recommend cleaning the vertical temp sensor with rubbing alcohol first. A lot of the time that will take care of it. If cleaning doesn't do the trick, replace just the sensor. (YouTube videos show how). If I remember correctly, Camp Chef is able to query the controller also. I would call them. They are quite responsive. (800) 650-2433.

I use Traeger Gill Cleaner. Works great.
BTW I have tried a few others that cost less, but for now, I am sticking with Traeger Grill cleaner.

What did Camp Chef say and did you solve the problem?

Dwade, I have a Camp Chef Smoke Pro DLX and had the same problem. I put a 17 lb brisket on the smoker and set it at 225. The smoker was swinging 70-100 degrees hotter than the set temperature and changing the temperature on the controller had no effect. The brisket was done in 5 1/2 hours. On the next cook, the same thing happened with a pork butt. My Thermoworks Smoke X4 confirmed the high temperature excursions. I emailed Camp Chef via their warranty repair request on the website. It took about a week for them to respond, but they sent me a new temperature probe. The replacement was easy and it fixed the problem. You might want to try that before replacing the controller, especially if the smoker is still under warranty. I believe the Gen 2 wifi controller listed under Pellet Grill Accessories is the current replacement controller.

*I edited this post for a correction: The Gen 2 controller I mentioned is for smokers like mine. The Woodwind has a different controller. There are two listed under Support/Replacement Parts. Both are showing as out of stock.

I did eventually. Cleaning the probe didn't work and neither did the chatbot on their website, so I eventually just replaced the probe myself, but I haven't done more than one pork butt to test since I just got around to it. Will follow up to let you know how it goes!
