    A Close Call

Our younger daughter presented her PhD thesis seminar at UCLA on Thursday and so we went to see it and to spend the weekend in LA. When I left for the airport Wednesday morning, I had to drive through a pretty strong storm but thought nothing of it other than muttering about wadding a completely soaked rain shell into my backpack for seven hours airplanes and airports.

Sunday evening, as we got home, I noticed some cut up wood at the street and remarked to Lisa that I didn't think John had been planning to take down a tree while we were gone. Right after I texted him that we were home and he was off animal feeding duty, he called. He asked if I noticed anything different and I mentioned the wood by the street. He said that was from the tree that came down ON THE NEW OUTDOOR KITCHEN.

I thought I was going to die! While still on the phone, I switched on the light out there and went to see what the outcome was, expecting carnage. Once John stopped laughing, he explained there was nothing more than a rip in the screen and maybe a small dent in the drip edge of the roofing. The tree that came down was a small oak, only about 5 or 6 inches in diameter.

Here's a dramatic shot, looking from the tiny stump back towards the rip, which is a bit hard to see at this angle.

John still had the contact info for the subcontractor who did the screen work and had arranged for him to come on Saturday to repair the damage. Sadly, he didn't turn up, but it's a small enough repair job that we don't really need him anyway.

Our daughter's seminar went well. She appears to have accomplished quite a bit, and we are of course very proud. There is enough overlap of the work she did with Lisa's research that she ended with "And I'll be happy to take questions from anyone who isn't my mother." We also even went full tourist and attended a live taping of Celebrity Family Feud. That was quite entertaining.

Dodged a bullet there! Hope you weren’t sitting next to the door plug on the plane!
    Congrats to your daughter!

No 737 Max’s were involved in the trip, thankfully.

    Hearty congrats to your daughter!

You and your wife's pride in her is well deserved. And how cool is it that she carried on her mother's research.

Good news about the small amount of unexpected damage to your beautiful new outdoor kitchen. It's too bad that it happened at all, but then it could have been so much worse.

Hearty congratulations on your daughter’s accomplishment and on that of you and your wife to raise her so she felt comfortable carrying on mom’s research.

I’m glad your new kitchen was saved any extreme damage from the storm. I hope that torn screen is the worst thing you ever face with it.

Thank you Draznnl and fzxdoc She's not exactly carrying on Mom's work, but there is overlap. In fact Lisa knew Katie's PhD advisor before Katie was even born. Who knows, though, maybe the work will spark a new collaboration with him once Katie moves on. And Katie is likely to move on to patent law, so this is likely the end of her research days.

OH NOOOO! Tell her not to go to law school. I can’t think of any lawyer I know who actually enjoys it. Hell, I didn’t retire at 55 because I was having fun at it.

You'd think she'd listen to her older sister who bailed on law school after year two. But we can't live their lives for them. She has some vision of being in-house patent counsel for a large company. Didn't help that at Friday's dinner, she could chat with her thesis advisor's brother-in-law, who just happens to be in-house patent counsel for a successful tech company.

I’m happy there was no real damage, but that tree stump looks like a lot more than 5” or 6” in diameter.

Oh, Katie gamed the system from the start. She’s debt-free.

Next thing you know it will be a twig fell from the neighbors tree and scratched your siding. Your story is getting a little flimsy here Jim

Wow!!! Now that's an eventful trip! Sheesh, what if there was some really wild other thing happening at the same time, I dunno, like a TOTAL ECLIPSE or something! Wait...

Seriously, huge congrats to your daughter for defending her dissertation (that is a KILLER question line!), and I'm very glad for you that the damage from the tree is comparatively slight! Had to have been some panic moments there... and you got yourself a good neighbor for sure!

First of all congratulations to your daughter, Jim! I know you are proud.

It would have been a sad day for all of us if that kitchen had been damaged. It is surely a neat space. Glad it all worked out.

Congrats to your daughter young man. Now, if I was a different sort of person, knowing you and your mental capabilities, I might have a few paternity questions in relation to your relation. But I am certainly not that type guy, so I'll just say that is quite an accomplishment. I know you and your best half are awfully proud as you should be. And I am glad the kitchen came through.

Last thing, are you sure you weren't a contestant on the celebrity thing???

I wasn't, but we got some awesome contestants. NFL Players Association legends, including Terrell Owens. They were up against women Olympians. Got the beach volleyballers and Tara Lupinski (she was a hoot). Second episode was Earth, Wind and Fire vs The War and Treaty. Lots more fun than I expected. Steve Harvey is offscale fun on the stuff that doesn't make the broadcast.

I have lots of other oak already put aside. This one was red oak. I'm not so sure what flavor it would give.
