New Covered Patio and Cooking Area

I wanted to share the project that we have been working on since last summer! I apologize in advance, this will be a long, picture heavy post.

This all started because I installed a brick paver mosaic below our fire pit in the back yard, and my wife said that we didn't want the dog to track dirt into the house 2 years in a row. So one project kind of exploded into a much major renovation.

Below is a picture of what the back of our house used to look like:

We met with a couple of contractors and decided that we wanted to do a full width covered patio in the back yard, instead of the raised deck off the house.

Demo was wrapped up in September of 2023, and The house sat like this for the rest of the summer. Our contractor was working through designs and permits, we finally got our permits in December 2023.

Funny enough, we went on vacation just as the contractor had a break in the weather to tear into the roof. I set up a couple of cameras and had my dad run over and snap some progress pictures.

When we got home, the framing was up, and the roof was dried in. Waiting on an inspection from the city to sign everything off.

City inspector came by, said it was way over built, (Oh well) and signed off the final so he didn't have to come back. Now the tedious stuff can start, electrical, trim, etc.+

At this point, my wife decided that she didn't like the way that the posts were trimmed out. We decided that we liked the natural look better, and decided to swap the posts out for a cedar wrap instead of a trim board wrap.

At this point, we were looking at weather trying to decide when the concrete was going to go in. We ended up having a cold snap, causing us to wait a few weeks to get the concrete done. I had the guys move the hose spigot and swap out the slider for an exterior French door.

Had to wait a few days after the pour for curing. Contractor came back a few days later to Antique and Seal the concrete. Final Colors:

After letting the cure dry, I was finally able to start bringing my stuff back into the yard: The new Yoder YS640s found it's home. Also retired my 30 year old Weber Silver, and brought home a new Weber Genesis to replace it:

Mostly everything in it's place now:

And this is how it is currently sitting now!

Still going to be a little bit of a work in progress for little while. We need to replace some siding on the rear of the house, as well as bring some more dirt in to level the yard, and some final painting on the trim.

And of course my wife would like some new patio furniture to match her new space.

But overall, we love it and we think it turned out great.

Thanks for taking the time to look through this long post!

I had about 20 pictures in here before I realized it was limited to 12, so feel free to ask any questions or for more pictures.

    Cheers!

Great job, looks really nice! Good decision on the cedar wood posts me thinks. Just curious, what size and brand of TV did you go with?

This was a 65" LG that I had in my living room. I bought a new TV to replace it for the house and brought this one outside. We will see how long it lasts.

          Excellent post.
I know that space will give you years of enjoyment, and your diligence will inspire others here to do as fine a job.
Although I’m sure it was an expensive project, it ties into the roof beautifully, and it is built as well as the house itself.
          Love it. 👍👍🔨🪚

Thank you! Agreed it wasn't cheap, but with the price of houses lately, we talked and decided that we were going to stay in our house now and make some improvements.

I definitely think it was worth the price and it turned out great in our mind!

I think you did the right thing too. I do this kind of work and this looks like your contractor cared.

That’s gorgeous! Well done! Y’all will enjoy that for years to come. Ours isn’t as wide as yours. We decided to convert it into a screened in porch area. Grilling and smoking without bugs is great.

            +1 on that!
We spend more time outside than inside. Not dealing with bugs is important to us.

A great job! I hope you enjoy it a lot. It does look like you have enough room to host a Meatup.
