jfmorris I went with your recommendation (blade guard and all). My wife has really been down on the slicer, "You're not really going to get one of those are you? Where are you going to put it?" It's a legitimate question. Haha. For the price and utility, I'm thinking the slicer knife will be nice to have for a lot of reasons. (Heck, I can use it to trim briskets.) I also now understand why Japanese santoku knifes tend to have those bevels.

I appreciate everyone's input though. If the slicer knife doesn't work well enough, I'll revisit this when I have a bigger kitchen, lol.

After breaking a $135 Academy slicer after just 15 minutes of use. I got on ebay and bought a 1940 American Slicing Machine deli slicer. Weighs about 80 lbs and I had to do some restoration (I don't mind - vintage appliance restoration is a hobby of mine). It works great! I use it for meats and veggies.

Those things were a sweet machine.. my neighbor gave me one that was on the floor in the corner of his shop,. Told me if I could lift it I could have it. I picked up a Hobart that I use now so I called the neighbors kid to see if he wanted since his dad is now passed on. He was estatic to get it and picked it up 30 minutes later..

I tried a meat slicer, but I spent as much time cleaning it as using it. I decided I liked the rustic look just fine.

I watched the video on one of the Globes being sold locally and came away thinking, "Wow."

What about OSTBA Meat Slicer? This budget slicer gets its job done. What I like is that it can slice food very thin. Slicing is smooth and easy, as the blade is quite sharp. It is particularly suitable for slicing ham, cooked pork, bread and even potatoes. Hope this slicer holds up over time. I'm happy I bought it. You can read more about it here: https://www.justinscafe.com/best-meat-slicer/
