    Can Openers

My old timer handheld pliers handle manual can opener is done. Easy, I thought I would go online and get a newer-probably improved one.

Yikes. I find that Swing Away is no longer the same-got sold. The same can opener is now EZ Duz it.. Then the endless list of names of can openers. Some tout commercial/professional-read the reviews (3 or less), or the percentage of lesser reviews, to get the real story.

No warranties mentioned. Pictures of products all look great but you cannot tell easily, if at all, if construction of the can opener is solid. I.e. bolts instead of rivets, metal that wont flex or rust-not made to last a short time and then be replaced.

I guess the new norm is cheaply made, replace frequently, not be a kitchen tool that lasts for awhile.

Anyone have a manual can opener bought recently that seems like a long term good one?

OXO makes a nice opener that doesn't leave sharp edges on the can. OXO products are usually rated pretty high by ATK. Of course there's always an old P-38 opener which always works.

I was going to recommend the same can opener. Here's a follow up question: is it safe to place the lid back on and store leftover food in the can? I'm sure it may depend on the food.

That's the one I have also. Works great. Be sure to check out directions because it is easy, but not intuitive the first time you try to use it.

Attjack ; @ 6th Borough BBQ : I personally don't chance it with the original lid. If I don't use all of the contents after opening I discard the lid and cover with clear wrap but that is pretty much confined to small cans of sauce for pizza, not much else.

There you go! All the dogs agree, OXO is the one. My P-38 goes on every campout!

My wife refuses to use a P-38. Will keep looking. Heard from neighbor ez duz it is good.
I guess I was asking-has anyone bought a manual can opener recently that they use frequently in the house kitchen?-not on a camping trip, not from military surplus or knock off military surplus supply house.

Yes, the OXO we mentioned above. It's a champ for regular use.

You look like a hansom robust young man, why don't you just open it like POPEYE did!
AKA They don't make em like they used to. That goes for pretty much all small kitchen tools.
They still make the "Old Reliable" table top version courtesy of Edlund. For something that will fit into a drawer and perhaps be more satisfactory for your better half, swing- a-way is not bad

We have a Pampered Chef manual can opener. Works good.

At the risk of causing an uprising on our BBQ forum here, I will still mention Pampered Chef. Here's the one my wife bought and after I fought her tooth & nail because I wasn't used to it at first, now I LOVE this thing:

It really works, and it works SUPER easy, and no sharp edges on the lid.

Works the same way as the OXO - took me a while to get used to it too, but I think it's a lot better approach than the traditional style ones, especially the one hanging off of Deaf Arty 's keyring!

Gotta put in another vote for Oxo; though I can't say I've bought one recently. I think the one we've got dates from the last millennium.

No one mentioned the P-36 and I wonder why?

Trying to hold a can in front of a P-36 spinning propeller is kind of dangerous not to mention all the stuff will go flying out all over you if you stand on the wrong side.

HawkerXP well there is that. I was thinking of the "Aluminum P-36 explosive space modulator." 😃

Got it. Surprised that there was no mention of the can opener on the Boy Scout Knife or the Swiss Army Knife or the multitool.

On the serious side: Looked at what was mentioned. Thanks. Pulled the trigger on an EZ DUZ IT.

            Cheers.
