I love the connectivity of the iGrill, and use it frequently through my iPhone or iPad. I am outgrowing my iGrill "Classic" and looking to upgrade. My local Q-store carries these two models (iGrill II or Themo Works Smoke?) Does anyone have any experience with either of these? Any preference one way or the other?
Thanks!
Agree with Pirate Scott. I can't compare, as I went straight to the Smoke after buying other Thermoworks products. It's well engineered. rugged, and accepts a variety of probes. Only minor negative is temporary loss of connectivity with the remote unit, but their Gateway Wi-Fi unit reportedly fixes that problem. Outstanding customer service and support, too, should you ever need it.
Unless you are going to stay within 30 feet bluetooth range of the iGrill 2, I would look at the Smoke. I actually like that its got a dedicated remote, allowing you to look super geeky with your thermometer necklace on during the smoke. I don't have to fire up an app on my phone to check the temperature in other words. You can add the app integration later if you want it, with the Smoke Gateway.
The Fireboard gets really good reviews here, but is a little pricey for me.
I'm in a holding pattern on upgrading. The smoke looks great and the price is not bad. But I don't think it offers a ton over my old Maverick (which I've made wifi enabled!). So that probably means I should buy the Fireboard, but as you said it's pricey for something I don't really need.
Hi, my name is Darrell. I'm an OTR truck driver for over 25 years. During my off time I love doing backyard cooks. I have a 48" Lang Deluxe smoker, Rec-Tec pellet smoker,1 Weber Genesis 330, 1 Weber Performer (blue), 2 Weber kettles (1 black and 1 Copper), 1 26" Weber kettle, a WSM, 8 Maverick Redi Chek thermometers, a PartyQ, 2 SnS, Grill Grates, Cast Iron grates, 1 ThermoPop (orange) and 2 ThermoPens (pink and orange) and planning on adding more cooking accessories. Now I have an Anova sous vide, the Dragon blower and 2 Chef alarms from Thermoworks.
Thanks all! I have to admit, the idea of being able to monitor outside of bluetooth range sounds nice, like when I have to run to the store or something.
The Smoke will get you about 300' line-of-sight, less through walls and such. For another ~$90 you can get the WiFi Gateway for it to monitor when out & about.

I’ve got the smoke, used it 15+- Times now. If you would have asked me before last weekend I would said the smoke. BUT my remote stopped communicating with the base for some reason, just lost connection. If I can’t get it working I’ll be in the market for another monitor...😡😡
There is a method for reconnecting. This happened to me too. Took about two minutes. You basically re-sync and everything is good. You can call them and they'll talk you through it. Could probably find it on line as well.
Not good news Dadof3Illinois! I got a Smoke for Christmas and may have first opportunity to use it this weekend.
rmason104, since I haven’t used the Smoke yet, it’s hard for me to recommend. I tend to be very brand loyal and I love my Thermoworks DOT and ThermoPop. Then again, I am a Weber fanboy and iGrill is owned by Weber!
I’ve used an iGrill 2 since last summer and like it. Haven’t used anything else so I can’t compare. My experience has been I get a much longer virtual leash than 30’, I can go anywhere in the house with no issues and that was all I needed. This may be helped by the fact my grills are on the deck by 2 large windows. If connectivity is lost, the cook continues but I get a void in the graph over that disconnected timespan, and it’ll hook right back up. Accidentally closing the app doesn’t seem to impact anything, reopen it and the cook continues. I like being to set preset temps and ranges and name them whatever I want, and like having the graphs, especially the one with all probes on it. I usually take a screenshot of that one and save it with my grilling notes in Evernote. Weber support has been excellent. Good luck in your search...
I own all three. I’ve had the iGrill 2 for at least two years. I was happy with it until Weber purchased it, because they made the app so much worse. I then bought the Smoke (w gateway), it’s built like a tank. I like it, but there’s a bit of tinkering before everything’s set up (done once though). I then bought the Fireboard, and man do I love it! Just as easy to use as the iGrill 2, but way better app, better thermometer and the probe capacity! Plus it is only one unit (compared to the Smoke).
If you have the money to spend, buy a Fireboard and you will never look back.
