I just picked this up from COSTCO. MCS kicked in. Thought it might be a good tool for the Grillgrates. It looks kind of gimmicky, though. If anyone has used one as has anything positive or negative to say about it it would be appreciated. If no one has used one, I guess I will go for it and give a review.

Go for it! I don't have one but hear they work (on grills). Plus no broken wires like a brush.
    Plus Costco takes anything back!

No real hits, yet. So I'm likely going to do a review. They way it looks like it works, I may have to do a few cooks before I can give it a really good review - especially because the Grillgrates are so deep.

There is a demo on it somewhere. It looks most interesting, enough that I considered getting one. But, hey, you get to test it out & let us know. That's ok in my book.

What if your grill doesn't fit the grooves exactly? Are all grills exactly the same?

You're supposed to scrape the paddle on a hot grill to build grooves into the end of the paddle that will match your grill. If you have another grill with different spacing you would need another one to get an exact match.

Interesting, I think I have an old wooden canoe paddle hanging around - cut it down a bit and just might work!

Well, you'd certainly get some leverage!

I bought one last summer and used it a couple of times. I did not find it as effective as a good wire brush. However, it makes a great prop for a birthday celebration, ouch!

Hahaha-My wife saw it and asked what it was. I told her "It's for when you are out of line" she didn't hesitate when responding, "that's why I have the tire iron in the closet". I was just kidding but I checked the closet to ensure she was, too.

My review of the Great Scrape - I got a really good hot fire going on my Grillgrates and the tool easily seared to the form of the grates. It worked like a charm on the surface. The grooves down low were another matter - I was worried about compromising the side of the tool. I have no idea how long it will last or how it will perform without the surface heated. The leverage of the paddle is really nice. You can get good elbow grease without much force. I am more than satisfied with my $19.00 purchase at COSTCO. I bought my dad Grillgrates for his birthday so I'm buying the paddle for him as one of his Christmas presents. Click image for larger version

How's it work on ordinary grills? Scraping and cleaning my grill is a huge pain, there is crud on both sides of the grill and it requires a lot of elbow grease to get it off.

Why do you need this particular tool? Couldn't you just use a thin piece of wood or something? Maybe a 1x4 or a roof shingle?

Lost in China - I think you need a hardwood for it to work. A softwood like pine would wear too quickly, and baked on grease or food particles might be harder than the wood.

Lost in China - My Grillgrates were devoid of badly stuck on crud when I did my test. I do a pretty good job of keeping the really gunky stuff off by brushing after I cook and spraying the grates either before or after every few cooks. I would imagine that this tool will do a really good, easy job of keeping things clean as long as I don't do a few really sticky cooks before using it.

I looked it up. $34.95 for a piece of shaped wood. Jeez! I was thinking about getting one and I thought $19.95 was a lot.

My grill gets really gunky for whatever reason. I really need a solution. I have the CharGon grill scraper but it's a lot of work and only removes the biggest debris. I still have to do a thorough wipe afterwards. I miss the old days before the SnS when I would just let the fire burn the grease away and then go after it with a wire brush.

With the SnS I don't blowtorch the entire area underneath the grill any more. Just one small area gets heated.

I'd be willing to bet I've cooked with an SnS more than anyone else on the planet, and I have no issues with gunk. My kettle is quite clean of gunk actually. Are you using a pan or Aluminum foil to catch drippings? Prevention is the best cure when it comes to gunk.

Another option is to dump the charcoal out of the SnS after the cook, all over the charcoal grate, and let the charcoal burn whatever gunk you didn't prevent from happening.

I rotate my cooking grate, and allow each section to spend a few minutes over the SnS. Then brush away! Works like a charm

Clean the grate while it's still hot and cleanup is much, much easier.

At the end of a cook I turn my Grillgrates upside down toward the fire - I use both sides for cooking. I then turn them right side up again and give them a quick scrape after eating. This really helps avoiding getting that sticky build-up. Obviously this tool would not work in my smokers which have the diamond shaped grates. Heat, a putty knife and elbow grease get the gunk off of those.
