I love my Grill Grates. Haven't had a serious flareup since I bought them.

Every now and then a white substance shows up on my grates, usually a day or two after I've cooked on them.

Since I always vigorously clean my GGs after each cook by firing them up hot and wire brushing them off, I couldn't figure out what the problem was. Actually I was afraid it was mold.

Well it wasn't. I contacted GG and Michael suggested that it was salt deposit from the marinades or sauces on the meat.

I checked closely, and the white stuff brushes right off, so it's not mold.

Here's what the white residue looks like:

For example, in this photo the white stuff showed up about 2 days after I had grilled some marinated shrimp.

Has anyone else seen this on their Grill Grates?

can't say that i have, and your GG's look way cleaner than mine. Do you sink clean them, or do they just stay on teh grasser? If you sink clean them, what do you use for a cleaner? Right after the cook, i do leave them on teh gasser to get the high heat treatment and a brusching, but then i do sponge/scrubby them with a bit of dawn in the sink. They don't go back on the grill after drying... i keep them in my grill cupboard indoors.

I don't sink clean them, CurlingDog , but perhaps I should. I just wipe the white residue off with a damp paper towel. It does not come back after that.

I've met Michael. He knows his stuff.

If it shows up after the post cook burn off, it's got to be some fine ash residue. Michael might just be right calling it residual salt, but i wouldn't want to taste it to be sure!

Well, I guess I could taste it, CurlingDog , if I got curious enough. But I think it's salt, as Michael suggested. It looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, as the saying goes.

I don't think it's ash because it does not show up right after my super duper burn off and scrub down with grill brushes. It shows up a couple of days later always directly over the area where the food was placed.

It does look like salt. I have never seen this on mine. But as Curling Dog said, Yours are much cleaner than mine. So at least you have that going for you.
