    Pepper mill?

My wife complains that the course ground black pepper I use when cooking a steak is getting stuck between her teeth. I try to keep things simple so I buy 16 mesh pepper in the big containers and use it for everything. Could I put 16 mesh in a grinder and get a smaller grain? I dislike that old pepper we had as a kid that was basically pepper dust. Would I be better off grinding whole pepper corns (something else to buy) or just try to find a smaller grind for sale? I’ve not had a pepper grinder in 30 years. My last one was useless. Is it the thing I need to get now?

Throwing your 16 mesh into a blade grinder will do it. We use a small Krups grinder we bought years ago for about $10 to do the exact thing to many spices including pepper. But, what kind of grinder do you have already?

A small electric coffee grinder is what I use for pepper.

Oak Smoke. Your grinder will do fine

I think any decent pepper grinder will do what you want. It would help if the grinder is adjustable.

I got this for grinding multiple types of spices. Easier to adjust, so easy to use for pepper, coriander , mustard seed, etc.

Oak Smoke I need to amend my reply somewhat. I use the manual Kona mill I posted for making larger quantities such as MMD or rubs for large cuts of meat. I use the Finamill as my daily grinder with pods for pepper, sea salt and assorted peppers. There is a review of it on the free side. https://amazingribs.com/ratings-revi...-starter-pack/

a couple years ago i got a Pepper Cannon for a Fathers Day present. very easy to adjust the grind size, and super satisfying to use.

i love it, but it's pricey - one of those things i probably wouldn't have bought for myself but glad i have.

Same here - my son gave me one for FD several years ago. Pricey, but I haven't seen a better one.

I keep looking at that thing knowing it would be a welcome addition to my kitchen, but I can’t bring myself to drop that much $$$ on a pepper grinder.

Maybe I’ll show this post to my boys to give them a hint for Father’s Day!

Make sure it is made from basalt; typically of Mexican origin. Stay away from marble or other very smooth materials.

I was digging in a cabinet because I thought I remembered getting one of those as a gift for Christmas a couple of years ago. Sure enough there’s one in there!

I got mine from Rancho Gordo, who has them made in Mexico. Currently their website only shows small ones. I have a larger version.

This is one we bought for kitchen use, it is adjustable, rechargeable, and doesn't cost a fortune. Like you mostly just use 16 mesh for cooking, but the grinder would work for a finer grind. Just a thought, but rather than trying to get a finer grind, why not go with a larger grind that can't get between her teeth?

I ask her that question the other day. Her mind is set on finer pepper. I like the looks of the set you bought.

So long as the pepper mill can “twist” down to be finer……

this is a thing for us at home. BF loves a coarser grind to finish a dish at the table. I love a “dustier “ pepper, so we are constantly adjusting the grinder.

I was looking at a Peugeot manuel grinder for this. But I have to be careful I’m a sucker for kitchen gadgets.

I love black pepper. Fresh ground has much better flavor than pre-ground. Although, I do buy large sizes of pre-ground for making rubs where the flavor snap of fresh ground is not so important. For salads and most table applications, I prefer to grind fresh. Most good quality grinders are adjustable but that takes precious time and dinner guests don't necessarily know how to work the adjustable feature. Adjusting at the table can be messy too. So, I have two separate pepper grinders, one set to medium coarse, (love it on salads) and the other to a finer setting. This is one is very easy to adjust and use: Kuhn Rikon Ratchet

And this one is prettier on the table and works well too: Amazon.com: Kaiciuss Salt Pepper Grinder Mill Arcylic, the Best Peppercorn Grinder with Adjustable Mill-Clear: Home & Kitchen

Pre-ground pepper will lose its fresh flavor after opening. You can adjust for this somewhat by just using more but it will never be quite the same fresh snappy flavor as fresh ground. There are other good adjustable grinders out there. In fact, there are plenty of choices. See Amazon. The only ones I really don't like are the battery powered grinders that seem to lose power right when you need them to get the food going. And then you go franticly searching for the spare batteries that you may or may not have more of.

I love rechargeable lithium-ion batteries in power drills and garden tools, not so much in my kitchen. Hmmm, does Makita make a blender that takes their 5amp batteries? If so, I make get one of those.

I would place a tooth brush along side the knife and fork

One of my deep and abiding flaws is I’ve always been attracted to intelligent women who have the strength to speak their mind. My wife would have no problem expressing herself if I put a tooth brush next to her fork. I do push her buttons once in a while just for fun so I will think about it!

Oak, better yet. After you place the toothbrush do tell her where the idea came from. I would like to hear her laugh.

FireMan I will, we laugh a lot here. Neither of us takes life too seriously these days. Once in a while we have to clear off a spot and lock horns but it’s not often at all. I think everyone is that way. I wouldn’t trade her for anyone I’ve ever known.

I have a nice Peugeot, used it a few years.

I've since replaced it with a HexClad Pepper Grinder, and I think it's a major upgrade. I have this one:

I have several of these, with a Platinum review on the free side:

With this one, it’s easy to adjust the size of the grind, and that is really important. I want coarse grind for some things, like steaks, and fine grind for other things like sauces. Yes, the size of the grind makes a difference.
