Weber Lighter Cubes price hike on Amazon.com

FYI in case anyone uses these regularly. I used to buy the 24-count boxes of the Weber cubes for $3-something on Amazon, with free Prime shipping. Now I see the price is $8.99. But, Home Depot still has them for $3.29. Not sure if this is temp thing on Amazon or a permanent move, but a nearly 200% hike in 1.5 months is steep.

I may begin making my own like Meathead if they stay that high.

I bought an electric starter about 5 years ago for about $15. $3 per year sounds about right for me.👍

Are they just wax or does Meathead have a special recipe?

Here, on the right column, is Meathead's recipe.

I'll bet it's just Amazon since they mess with their prices a lot. Firecraft.com still has them for $3.29. Over time we shall see! I've got about 5-6 packages on hand and a propane torch and electric lighter.

I just did a search for them and they're pretty much around the $3.29 range everywhere except Amazon. For a while it was listed as an "add-on" item. But the $8.99 price looks like a strange aberration.

Last week before I bought 4 packages at home depot for $3.29 I think they were $12 per package on amazon. Strange price hike. They must be losing money to ship something that cheap.

Amazon Prime can be convenient and a pretty good deal ... but you've got to be careful to check prices (which, for example, is why ThermoWorks posts a warning about purchasing from Amazon, eBay, etc., on the ThermoWorks.com site).

Thanks guys. The good news is it looks like it's just Amazon being crazy with their prices, that's good. I've never seen that before. I'll wait until the dust settles there instead of going to home depot and buying a dozen boxes.

Dang Huskee ...one box of 24 lasts me over an year. I got a box last summer and only used 6 out of it so far.

Huskee, I put items I plan on purchasing soon in my shopping cart, then "save for later". It's crazy to watch the prices go up and down.

DWCowles I use either a half cube or a full one every cook. But I don't use a torch. I used to but in adverse weather I didn't like having to stand there torching the coals. I find the cubes light easy even on rainy weather and I go back in and let it do its thing. If only buy a dozen if I thought the price was going up everywhere. A box lasts me a couple months I'd say. fuzzydaddy I do that too, that's how I noticed their price yesterday. I was going to add on a box to a purchase. Nope!

They were $11.99 at Amazon when I checked around Christmas. Amazon's price are sometimes high due to availability too. Lowe's has them for $3.29.

I agree with the "availability" theory. I have also noticed ridiculous prices on Amazon items that were out-of-stock and read somewhere that this is done intentionally as a "placeholder".

Assuming that you're using a chimney, why do you use them instead of newspaper or a simple propane torch?
