    Got a mortar & pestle...

I forget why I wanted/needed one. Must have been something, I'll probably remember. I hope so. I've made it pretty far without one.

It's 2 cups, so big enough for most things, but not too big for little things. And freakin' heavy.

I'm going to go crush some rice now, it came with instructions to do that until the rice grinds white.

I'm always needing this for something or other. I have a coffee grinder, but it is worthless for small quantities of lightweight stuff. I may grab one of these.

Kenji swears it's the best approach for making pesto. I've done it a time or two (but my setup is cheap wood). Pretty good. I'm sure it would be even better with a proper setup like that.

I've somehow made it all my adult life without one as well, but am always seeing recipes where they say to use it. I can see needing it versus my little coffee chopper/grinder thing if wet ingredients like minced garlic or fresh herbs are involved. My wife would see it and think I had gone nuts though, so doubt I will order one any time soon, haha.

You can get away with a lot when your wife believes you are nuts. Just sayin'. You should get one of these.

Yeah, I won’t be able to leave it out on the counter, that’s for sure.

I have 2, a big one that I've never used (from Costco) and a little one that I got as a gift years ago that I primarily used for grinding up things like fennel, caraway seed, and rosemary, at least until I got a spice grinder. They are very handy, imho.

I looked at different sizes, this one is right in between, that’s why I chose it. It will be useful for coriander seeds, and garlic, and like mrteddyprincess said, popcorn salt.

Hey Murdy what type of spice grinder do you have?

Bob's BBQ -- I believe the brand is Cool Knight, we've had it a year or so, and it works fine. Available on Amazon.

I use mine to never have to buy "popcorn salt." I just crush up Kosher salt and make that really small theater-style salt like they have at the movies.

I also use it Murdy to crush fennel and caraway seeds for sausage making.

I use mine a lot for Asian cuisine, especially Thai.

I love using mine, it is a great tool.

There is a local Mexican Restaurant that serves Mol Cajete in a giant version of this....would love to get my hands one of those.

Not sure how big you mean, but Costco used to carry a good sized one. I picked one up but haven't really used it.

Ha! I got one about 10 years ago thinking I really needed it and I think I have used it maybe two or three times all in. But I guess when you need one, you need one. Right? 🤷‍♂️🤣

              That’s kinda what I’m hoping doesn’t happen….

I have a feeling that if I got one, it would odd nothing but sit on the counter next to my Alaskan ulu knife and bowl that haven’t been used in the tenish years I’ve owned it.

I have one that was a Christmas gift many years ago.
I'm pretty sure it was something I put on my list for Santa.
I'm certainly sure that I can't remember the last time I used it.
It is a nice decorative piece in the china cabinet, so there is that 🤷‍♂️

Well which one do ya got? I have one but I feel like it’s too big and not the right shape so it doesn’t really ever get used.

Y’know, one of the reasons I’ve never needed one is when a recipe starts with “grind the spices with a mortar and pestle” I usually just skip it. If it’s garlic, I can use the press, but coriander seeds? Nope.

                  No excuses now.

My next batch of Meathead's Columbia Gold sauce is finally going to have some properly ground up celery seeds and rosemary in it!

My wife has one, it was her grandmother's. It's old and heavy. It sits in front of the fireplace with fall decorations in it for now. It will change with the seasons.
