richinlbrg did you buy into the Meater on kickstarter? They're available in 2 mo, probably retail then too if you didn't buy in already. Not only are they wireless transmission, but they're Wi-Fi and the probes are wireless. The open end of this equation is of course their reliability and longevity too, but I'm optimistic. The designers seem intelligent and are BBQ folk like us.

I did not, Huskee . I had not even heard of it until it was mentioned earlier in this thread, and have not yet had the chance to go look at it. But I certainly intend to!
Thank you for bringing this to my attention!!

1.5 mega bucks and almost 10K backers.
Seems there is a lot of demand. May well work for the gift, not sure yet if it works for me (no smartphone here). I'm thinking my iPad will work with it, though.
Looks like a VERY exciting product!!

Large Big Green Egg, Weber Performer Deluxe, Weber Smokey Joe Silver, Fireboard Drive, 3 DigiQs, lots of Thermapens, and too much other stuff to mention.
The $20 Taylors that are available in most supermarkets work fine in an indoor environment. They have both time and temperature alarms. You should calibrate the device by putting the probe in boiling water. I have two of these, and one is high by a degree or two, the other is low by a degree or two. Write on the back how far off it is, and work accordingly.

*Kamado Joe "Classic Joe"*
*Weber Spirit (for quick weeknight cooks)*
*Cyber Q Wi-Fi temp controller for overnight cooks*
*ThermaPen Instant* *Thermapen Chef Alarm* ...and pretty much any wheat beer!
I've taken to using my CyberQ for monitoring temps, even if I don't need to use the fan controller. Coupled with the PitPal app on my iPhone I can monitor temps from anywhere I have Internet access. It has 3 slim food probes and one alligator clip "pit probe". I've used it on my oven indoors. For what the dang thing costs I figured I'd try to get more use out of it!
I also backed the Meater on Kickstarter. I figure with the Wi-Fi block I should be able to monitor it from anywhere.

Interesting device is the Meater - Looks like great piece of kit - but so was the drone that I ordered on kickstarter and the company went into liquidation...
Back to the Meater - I wonder how they cope with the Faraday cage effect of the grill or PBC metal enclosure.
I use a Maverick dual probe - which is OK and does the trick. I like the concept of the Meater and it sounds and looks good - think I'll wait until some reviews on it before splashing out. Until then... its the Maverick.....

I have used the igrill, only got about a year out of it. I have the Maverick 733 and have had good luck with it. I use the Maverick mostly when grilling. In the smoker i use either the bbqguru digiQ or the bbqguru CyberQ. The CyberQ works with its own wifi based IP and can be checked using a smart phone, laptop, ipad ect. For consistent pit temps and food temps I love the bbqguru products.

Weber Genesis S-330
Weber Summit Charcoal Grilling Center
Weber Go Anywhere charcoal portable(my oldest Weber)
Maverick 732
Tappecue
ThermaChef
ThermaWorks Smoke
Thermapens
I've been really happy with the Tappecue, works on wifi and has an app for the iPhone plus you can have them email you a log of your session and graph it in Excel.
My only gripe is that it isn't waterproof and that it runs off a wall wart but I just put it in a ziplock bag if it's damp or rainy.

I guess I'm just grill ignorant but here's what I do. I monitor my temps by making sure the dome temp is stable and use a round Kingsford thermometer at the grate level. I pretty much know when something is getting close to being done, that's when I use my Thermapen to check the internal temperature.
Again, it's probably just me but why do you need to monitor the internal temperature when you flat out know it's way below where it needs to be? That comes into play during the last half hour or so of the cook and that's when the Thermapen is used.
