This is a place I’ve posted about before, Oakridge Smokehouse in Schulenberg, Tx. I’ve stopped by there a few times before on the way to San Marcos, but damn, if they don’t have the best Chicken Fried Steak, they’re definitely in my top 2. I stopped by again today for lunch. The steak is decent sized and has an incredible crust, I could eat just the crust and be happy….almost. Everything is made from scratch and delicious, including the pintos I had with it. Wish they’d open one up near my house.
I may have mentioned this before, but, John, if you have time and want to knock around Schulenberg, you should take the Painted Church Tour put on by the Chamber of Commerce. My wife and I did it with a group from our church several years ago. The tour was great and ended up at the Oakridge Smokehouse for lunch.
Large Big Green Egg, Weber Performer Deluxe, Weber Smokey Joe Silver, Fireboard Drive, 3 DigiQs, lots of Thermapens, and too much other stuff to mention.
For being the only business near itself, the small signage and long setback actually make it hard to find from the road:
I was pretty certain there wasn’t going to be a line problem on a random Thursday in mid April. I was right. And after this slug, there was no line at all.
They have a really nice outdoor seating area.
Nice artwork!
This pup had his eyes on the food. He was wary of us, but kept his eyes on the plate. Sid’s plate, to be specific.
The ordering counter:
I ordered a taco special: one brisket, one pulled pork. I got chicharrones mac & cheese for the side, and I snagged a link of the pork & serrano sausage.
I agree with David 58limited, the brisket was a little dry but had good flavor and a great smoke balance. I was going to ask for fatty and chopped, but I got distracted and forgot. I really liked everything else immensely. Sausage is one of the things I like getting here in TX; everyone makes it a little bit different, and all the variations are great.
The crew! Sorry Kev, I thought I had you in there. But you’re there! Me, David, Kevin, Jay, , Jill, Sid.
We were up and at 'em before all the youngsters so we went out and found kolache. I had an apple and jalapeno sausage. The sausage was good enough that it was gone before I thought to take a picture. That, and I'm still trying to function on one cup of coffee. Lisa had a cherry and a peach. She liked hers too.
A couple of weeks ago I got a message from James with Chef Heart . You might remember their company makes custom spice and rub blends, either their own, or they can make your own blends for you, complete with custom made labels. James kindly offered to send all of us some of their Bold Basics spice, along with our own custom made label commemorating our MeatUp. It’s a blend of black peppercorn, onion, garlic and salt. 👍 I thought it was a great gesture on his part, thanks James! If you’re not familiar with them, here’s their website. https://spicestore.chefhe.art/
I've ordered several items from Chef Heart.
I'm very pleased with the products and the service. They were delivered ahead of schedule. The Asian blend I ordered is the perfect seasoning for a quick Ramen

Andrrr lol…. The MeatUp won’t even officially start for another couple hours and I already feel like I’ve eaten enough food for a week.
Here is my leftover box from 2M. For $16.95 it was 2 tacos and a side. I wasn’t expecting half a pound of pulled pork, TWO full slices of brisket (another half pound), and almost a pint of mac & cheese. Especially for $16.95. That’s why I ordered the sausage.
