My Austin trip is this week. Found a spot to visit and try some Texas BBQ - The two spots I found that were open early in the week and for dinner were Terry Blacks and Cooper’s Old Time Pit BBQ. I’m down town and ended up going to Cooper’s since it was walkable from where I’m staying.
I was straight carnivore tonight - only meat as I wanted to try a few things and knew the sides would just make me uncomfortably full! So, I went with 1/4lb brisket, 1/4 turkey and a 1/4 jalapeño cheddar sausage. It was all pretty good, the sausage was excellent! Snappy skin and perfect inside. I think I was right at $30 with tip.

But, since I’m talking about food spots - I will plug the restaurant I visited last night - Mexta which is on 6th and Congress. Mexta is a Mexican Gastronomy themed spot and the two items I had were excellent! Great guacamole and my main dish, Tikin Xic Salmon (Achiote paste rubbed salmon) was outstanding! I will be recreating this dish at home I enjoyed it so much. If you enjoy Mexican food with a Yucatán influence, give it a try! I know I only had the two dishes, but the others sitting at the bar while I was there all enjoyed their dishes from what I heard.
And the last spot I visited was for lunch, Perla’s Seafood & Oyster Bar. I had two dishes, Oak Grilled Spanish Octopus and Oak Grilled Texas Gulf Redfish. Both were great, the octopus was just as I expected, with that char from the grill and earthy smokey paprika flavor. The Redfish, I opted for a red chimichurri sauce that was nice as well.
I should have taken photos of the other meals, but I didn’t. The Mexta salmon dish was beautifully presented as well, one of the nicest plated presentations I’ve seen!
Hope you enjoy your trip when you visit. I know I’ll be here once a quarter now and will plan a trip mid to late week so I can try to get to some of the other BBQ spots mentioned by the others.
