Kevin, you know damn good and well I massaged your legs! Remember on the ride back to the hotel?

The park Kevin mentions that we went to was Pedernales Falls State Park. The water levels were pretty low this time, but it was still beautiful nonetheless.

Glad ya'll are having a good time. I'm not a big fan of hiking on my vacations, though - I'm more of a sit in front of the campfire and drink beer kind of vacationer. Or sit on the beach and drink beer. Or sit in a restaurant and drink beer... or...

Yeah, I think we did enough walking on our European vacation this year, not to mention enough stairs, to cover my quota for a few years.

In the Old Town Square where we had lunch yesterday, was this neat little store. They sell all kinds of cool knick knacks and house/yard items.

          Looks like a good time.

I’ve also been to the Oakridge Smokehouse…the pickup needed fuel and I figure, why not..? I pretty much much had the same reaction as Panhead John . Nothing like I expected. Good…though a little disappointing because in the few minutes that it took to dump 20 gallons of gas into the truck and roll across the street…I was SERIOUSLY wanting some BBQ. Still worthy of a stop if you’re in the area and want a good lunch.

I can say I have officially had the best brisket I have ever eaten. Burnt Bean somewhere here in Texas. I even ate the fat. It was excellent. The sides, corn pudding and roasted brussels, were good. Also pork ribs and jalapeño cheese sausage.

I HAVE OFFICIALLY EATEN MY FIRST BRUSSELS SPROUTS SINCE THE 6O’S…..

The Burnt Bean BBQ Co. Kevin mentions above is located in Seguin, Tx., about a one hour drive from our rooms in Blanco. After getting there a few minutes before 11am, we waited in line for about an hour until the time we ordered. Let..me..tell..you, it was damn sure worth the wait! Everyone raved about how good the Que was. Burnt Bean placed #4 in last year’s Texas Monthly Top 50 In Texas and I can see why! I was shocked though when I got my bill…..$42.63 for my lunch! 😱 I can honestly say that this was probably the most amount of money I have EVER paid for lunch! And that didn’t include my $2.00 for a canned Dr. Pepper. After my first few bites though, I said "aww f… it, who cares?"

I ordered 2 slices of point brisket, 1 pork rib and some jalapeño and cheese sausage. My sides were an order of Hot Cheeto Queso Mac and some Cowboy Beans. The brisket had a great and flavorful bark and was so tender, I actually picked up a piece with my hands and part of it fell on my plate. Had a great smoke flavor also, just the right amount of smoke IMO. The pork rib was also flavorful, good bark with just a little pull to bite off the bone…perfect for me. The sausage was pretty damn good too.

The Queso Mac was basically a macaroni and some type of sauce with Flaming Hot Cheetos finely crumbled and sprinkled on the top. Damn it was good! One of the best sides I’ve had in a BBQ joint. The Cowboy Beans looked like just a regular pot of pintos, but they were also some of the best beans I’ve ever had, the flavor was killer.

A few of the folks got a side of Brussel sprouts that were pan fried or something, not sure. Uncle Bob’s wife Lee offered me some of hers so I tried it, not too bad I thought. As many of you know, I’ve always said I hated Brussel sprouts, having not eaten any at all since I was a kid. I might just give ‘em a try again one day, if I can find a good recipe. [never did I think I would ever say that].

I will say that for BBQ, this was in my top 2 or 3 places I’ve ever eaten. 👍👍👍

The mentions of the Oakridge Smokehouse brought back quite a few memories for me. In the 1980s, there used to be a Boy Scout camp named El Rancho Cima located, I think, in Wimberly. (It no longer exists.) It was the place for week-long summer camp for all Scout troops in the Greater Houston area at the time.

A required stop, both coming and going that week, was the Oakridge Smokehouse. And, of course, you got a chicken fried steak. Perfect way to both start and end camp.

On Thursday while I was waiting for everyone to show up I visited the Buggy Barn Museum just north of town. They have 200 old horse drawn wagons, buggies, and hearses dating from the 1850s to the early 1900s. Several have been used in TV shows and movies and they have a reproduction Old West town for commercials, movies, TV, and weddings. For those interested in Old West history it is a great place to visit. I didn't take very many pictures but here are a few:

At the entrance is this wagon used in the Yellowstone prequel "1883"

CaptainMike The rooms inside are pretty nice, everyone seems pleased with them. While the grounds can’t compete with The Rainbow, this location more than makes up for it. The WiFi is down, so everyone’s having to use their phone as a hot spot. We asked them to blow off the deck for us, but that was never done…There’s new owners as of July and they’re doing some remodeling, so they get a pass I guess.

I hope y’all told the Burnt Beam kitchen staff that y’all were AR members in good standing who gives their collective seal of approval to the brisket. Along with a disclaimer that your opinions don’t mean Jack.

Wayne, when we walked into the Burnt Bean, everyone there immediately recognized us as Pit Members. Some people bowed to us and offered us their place in line and others just gave us a standing ovation. The owner came over and immediately comped our meals. 🙄
