Official Fall 22’ Texas MeatUp- Blanco, Tx. Accept No Imitations!

After leaving Houston this morning I stopped about halfway to Blanco for lunch. I pulled off I-10 in a little town called Schulenberg. After exiting I saw a place called Oakridge Smokehouse Restaurant. Figuring it was a BBQ joint I pulled in for lunch. After going inside I found out it wasn’t. It turned out to be one of those down home, country style cooking places. Hey, that was fine with me! Instead of their lunch buffet I saw, I opted for ordering off the menu.

Scanning the menu, I stopped when I saw they had chicken fried steak. Hadn’t had that in a few years. And damn was it good! Everything here was fresh and made from scratch. The chicken fried steak was tender with a great tasting crust! Fresh smashed taters and cream gravy with fried okra were my sides. The cream gravy was awesome, as was the fresh fried okra. One of the best lunches I’ve had in a while! After I waddled back to my truck, I hit the road for Blanco…..

CaptainMike We don’t have income tax in Texas, but we most definitely have property taxes. I won’t say anything bad about Oklahoma other than income taxes. I know nothing about Tennessee.

I went to Texas Cannon Brewery for lunch and beer. They've been open about two years but just started serving food this year. I wanted a wagyu brisket sandwich but they were out of wagyu brisket (they get get a limited resupply Wednesday and start smoking it on Thursday) so instead I had a pretty good cheese burger minus the rabbit food:

What’s wrong you? Chicken fried steak should on the regular meal rotation.

On my way to Blanco, I was fortunate enough to have traveled along a segment of "The Devil’s Backbone". This a scenic 2 lane, winding, twisting and hilly highway which is famous for its views. Having to drive, I couldn’t take my eyes off the road but for a few seconds at a time. I happened upon a small rest area with picnic tables and gorgeous, scenic views of the Hill Country. I pulled in for a bit to snap a few pics.

The area was surrounded by a 7 foot chain link fence, I’m assuming to prevent people from straying into the rough terrain. It was a pretty steep drop beyond the fence..and if you fell, could cause serious injury, or worse. The paper you see on the fence isn’t trash. These are small handwritten memorials to friends and family who have passed away. I’m not sure why they did this here, maybe one of my fellow Texans can chime in. Anyway, my picture taking was hampered somewhat by the fence being in the way, but here goes.

On my bucket list is to visit Texas, hunt feral hogs, and shoot one or more.

bbqLuv The hog hunting is fun. The folks in Oklahoma want to get rid of them so bad that you don’t have to have a hunting license to hunt them, even if you’re a nonresident. The only time there’s any restrictions is during rifle season for deer.

We decided to eat lunch in town today, so we decided on something just down the street from our rooms, Old 300 BBQ. Don [txf] and Julia, Kevin, David and myself all went there this morning at opening time of 11. They had a good reputation for BBQ and didn’t let us down. I was able to order just what I wanted, as they sold meat by the pound, 1/2 lb. or 1/4 lb. I got brisket, 1 pork rib, jalapeño sausage with creamed corn and pintos as my sides.

All the meats were good, I’d give em a solid B overall. The cream style corn I had was exceptional!…the best I’ve had, great flavor to it…A+. Pintos were…ok, I’d give em a C+. Overall everyone thought the place was pretty darn good.

A little while ago we went to a state park. I thought we would just walk a few steps to the banks of the river, take a few pics and get back into the ac. Instead we walked 12 miles down a dusty road, descended about 300 stone steps and got to the river. It was scenic, but then we had to walk back. I put the blame squarely on 58limited and Panhead John. And neither one of them offered to massage my sore legs.
