These things are awesome. I would ask to see the bottom of the cooker to make sure it is not rusted out or anything. Check to see the conditions of the grates, as the are expanded steel, they can rust out or warp if it has not been used correctly or not taken care of.
Obviously, make sure to get pictures of it before you buy.

It used to be offered as an option on the 1st prize giveaway, and I always thought that if i won The Good One would be my choice. I hope it works out for you and would love to hear your cooking results.

Owning one, I’d say its strongest feature is its ability to very quickly fine tune and hold temperatures through the use of the damper (which I lovingly call the “flap”). That thing is magic, it can adjust temperature within seconds. Its greatest weakness, if you would consider it such, is that it is not at all an efficient cooker in terms of fuel usage. Smoke (and heat of course) will abundantly exit every crevice, and as such it is a bit of a charcoal hog. I kind of like seeing all that smoke though, I think it looks really cool. One thing I do is to save partially burned charcoal from my other cookers, and often use that in The Good One for low and slow cooks.

Congratulations! Nice buy. As you begin to use it, please let me know if you have any questions I may be able to help with, have had mine for about 8 years now. I have several different charcoal cookers but the Open Range is unique in that it is the only one having a charcoal chamber separate from the food chamber, and it has that fantastic damper control in between as well. Lots of fun to use.

Jesster, I spent a bunch of time cleaning this thing up last weekend and hoping on doing a seasoning burn this week if the weather works out. Lots of rain forecasted... I'm planning on using jealous devil lump and following good-one's basic lighting instructions. Seems like the big thing is using that middle baffle for temp control and setting the vents to about an 1/8 inch open. Am I missing anything?
I'll share some updated pics once it's in action.
