Rocket Grillz Review…..I call her "Delilah"
First a shout out to Kearry Hinson @ Rocket Grillz, he is a 1-Man-Show operating out of his metal shop. The man loves his craft, he is responsive and simply great guy to do business with and talk BBQ. When I picked up my Rig I was able to see a cabinet smoker, other Off-Sets and a Santa Maria at various stages of the build…really cool stuff. It was about a 4-5 month transition from ordering to pick-up. My guess is that the lag and price have probably increased from the time I ordered. Some of that delay was due to the late decision to add the counter weight and final decisions on the Bad Hat BBQ logo….I am not a business, but I might goof around with limited catering or fund raisers + it is my Pit Handle!
The design is based on a 24x48 traditional flow, 2-rack rig. It has a large collector that is level with the main rack. The removable stack is 42 inches tall has a top vent; top of the stack is 7 feet from the ground. The counter weight is a "Must Have" for this smoker. 2 free sliding ¼ inch tuning plates (15 inches wide) assist with temperature control. Flat Black paint on the frame and main chamber. A pull handle is mounted to the chamber just below the stack. Expanded Metal work table is fixed and is 8 inches wide. Door opening is 47.25 inches and 2 Tru Tell Temp gauges are standard.
The firebox is a 24 x 24 ¼ plate with removable ash pan. Rebar supports the fixed fire grate. I asked for a modified fire box that included a searing grate. The lid is reinforced and is heavy! Firebox is finished with linseed oil and we expect the patina to darken with age. The standard firebox has a top mounted vent that has can support a large fry pan or pot- but I like the idea of the grill surface AND venting the firebox. My special requests were the steak sear, counter weight, and a handle on the stack end (instead of side work table).
Actual Dimensions:
49 x 24.5 4 x4 square Stack (top is at 7 ft) Firebox - 24 x24
The weight is an estimated 1,250 Lbs. Each caster swivels and is rated for 2,000 pounds. Kearry and I pushed it up a U haul Ramp and I can push it around on my flat patio solo. (pushing it out from under the pavilion ….there is a 4 inch step from our walk way to the patio—this lift was really tough; my son and his buddies are studs and could not have done it without them.
Cost was significantly less then LSG 24x48 double door + huge savings when you account for shipping from Texas vs. renting a U Haul Trailer and nice road trip with my wife over a weekend.
Performance…it took almost 30 minutes to get the chamber to 200, Kearry told me were to place the tuning plates ant the temps are holding steady. Today was just playing with fire tomorrow I will cook some chicken, as practice, so that I can contribute to the inevitable "Win" for TEAM STICK BURNER!!
Thanks for Listening
