I recently got a used offset. It's a 40" long by 20" diameter barrel, with a 20" long by 20" diameter firebox. Not sure of the model. I'd like to redo the chimney. According to Feldon's calculator (http://www.feldoncentral.com/bbqcalculator.html), the 3" pipe should be almost 40 inches long. It's 16. I also want to move it down to grate level.

Anyone got some advice about chimney size? Is Feldon's calculator still valid? The previous owner said it was heck trying to keep the temps stable during a cook. I'm thinking the stack was too short and not pulling hard enough.

    Thanks!

Moving the smoke stack entry down to grate level is gonna work wonders for evening out the temp inside the chamber. 16 inches sound way too short. My math says 40 inches for a 3 inch pipe. So extend that smoke stack and you'll be way better off.

Is there an easy way to do that, for testing, other than grinding the old stack off and welding a new one on? I've seen someone use 3" aluminum dryer hose, stuff it in the hole & bend it down to the grates. And using 3" vent piping from the home improvement store to extend the stack. Would that be a valid test? Or would the thin material not retain heat & give me a skewed result?

Yes, that is exactly what you should do. Get that dryer hose and bend it down on the inside of the food chamber. The same goes for extending the length of the stack on the outside. Perfectly valid, all good. Get that smoke rollin'! Remember to include the "inside extension" in the stack's full length.

So it's the stack *length* and not its vertical height? I've never heard anyone make that distinction before, but I guess it makes sense. If that's the case, then the existing stack is about 19", including the horizontal leg.

Correct. It makes a big difference. Can't mess with the laws of thermodynamics. So measure from intake to outlet.

I've got some work to do = unfortunately my grill cover won't work with the required stack height. Anyone mod a cover / or have suggestions on that aspect?
