I picked up an M1 today. I bought it from the original owner who had never used it. He bought it on a black Friday sale but then got another smoker and never used the M1.
It came with the M Grills cover and the optional charcoal tray with the higher sides and divider. No pictures yet but I can't wait to try it out. I've been wanting one of these since 2016 when I first saw them advertised. I got it for a pretty good price with the included accessories and not having to pay the shipping costs.
Here are a couple of pictures of the grill and a picture of the stainless steel charcoal grate with sides that it came with. It also came with the standard charcoal grate. I still need to season it.
I also discovered that my Hasty Bake griddle and basting pan will fit on the grill as well. I did order the top grill extension and the griddle from M Grills before I tried using my HB griddle so I guess I will have two griddles that will work.
I’m considering an M36 currently, and wondered about two things in particular:
1 - Burning logs, does all of the heat coming up through the floor of the cooking chamber from the firebox create any issues with too much radiant heat and drying out meat?
2 - Similar to the above, the plus of this design has to be the efficiency - I have to imagine the offset cooking is very efficient, which makes me wonder if it’s so efficient that there is less wood smoke flavor when cooking with logs?
If you're looking for a direct heat cooker you can also use as an offset or indirect, etc - I'd suggest checking out the Smokeslinger. I know the guys who make that, I've been to the facility and I can tell you, the customer service and the build quality are out of this world.
Sorry I didn't see this sooner. I don't get on here much. I still like the M1 but don't use it that much. I have a lot of other cookers and since there is only two of us here these days, I use my smaller cookers like the HB Ranger or PKGO. The M1 burns all wood fine and I didn't experience any dried out meat. I use lump more than anything though. I usually had to add a split about every 45 minutes so it was pretty efficient.
