At Costco - absolutely ZERO Prime beef cuts

Not kidding. Went to Costco last night to pick up a ton of pork ribs and a couple of butts. Luckily I wasn't there for beef, because ironically, in all my years of shopping for meat at Costco, I've NEVER seen a complete lack of ANY Prime cuts - OR a complete lack of ANY packer briskets.

    Last night, I saw both.

I hope this is not a glimpse of things to come...

It happens, I’ve been there on days when there were no briskets. I’ve been there on days when there were 12 prime briskets. I have found that the beef offerings at my Costco change. Sometimes they have Picanha sometimes they dont - sometimes it’s choice sometimes it’s prime. Sometimes it’s called top sirloin cap sometimes it says Picanha. The good news is that the enthusiast cuts like Picanha, brisket, tomahawk ribeye, etc are on offer, just not all of them all the time. In Seattle they are catering to a much more diverse set of buyers between the halal, 3mm thick strip steak trays, and ribeye packs. They mix it up as opportunity allows.

I wish they would get their pork rib situation back to basics - all i can get in a cryo pack are loin back ribs. Now the St Louis ribs are cut against the bone and they sell them on a styrofoam tray. I haven’t seen baby backs since the pandemic started 🥲 I’ve never seen a bone-in butt but they do always have the 2-packs. And they also always have bellies. 🔥🔥🐿️

Interesting. We always have the two pack of butts available in both bone in and boneless. Boneless is $.10 more per pound

@Andrr, i noticed it’s available online and I only need to order $250 to avoid shipping 😉 Not suggesting i would do that but it an interesting data point. 🔥🔥🐿️

Seen similar at Costco too. Sometimes they just don't have it, maybe a truck delayed. We don't have the option to go back the next day so we have to wait until our next trip down. Our last trip 90% of their fish was salmon and really not much of anything else.

Home Costco, which normally has Prime packers only had Choice on Sunday. I picked one up anyway since I’m going to make corned beef from it. I figured since anything store bought is Choice at best I can’t lose. But hopefully that was just an anomaly since home Costco usually has Prime.

We haven't seen prime brisket in quite some time. Plenty of choice.

This has been talked about here before but we’re nearing a point of major decline in our favorite food source. The graph in this article says it all… https://www.cattlerange.com/articles/2023/07/usda-revises-2023-beef-production-up-and-2024-beef-production-down/ Get ready for bugs, the modern version of Soylent Green. This was what I was thinking about... hoping it's not going to become more common.

During lockdowns our Sam's had none. Then a couple weeks later they were back, but slim pickins, and at ~$7/lb, nearly doubled. I hope this just the 'trough' of the wave for you.

BTW CreekstoneFarms.com still has some decent sales. Rib loins, beef ribs, Chateaubriand, flank steaks, cowboy steaks, and a couple other things on sale if you need anything in the next week that you can't get locally. https://shop.creekstonefarms.com/collections/specials EDIT: rib loins are are now out.

Yep, there seems to be a shortage of prime cuts in some Costcos.
Supply issue here in Oregon I was told.

Same issues in Southern California. You might find some Prime Rib Eyes steaks , but Prime Briskets have not been around much.

It's cyclical at our Costco, and has been that way for years. When I do see a Prime packer, I pounce!

I just discovered we are not far from Costco Business center. They are more designed help restaurants and small business'. All I can say that is where I now get all of my meat. Huge selection meats, cheeses etc. Things I never would have thought would be at a Costco like whole lamb & goats. Outer skirt steak which is nonexistent outside of restaurants. If you are lucky enough to have one close definitely take a look. Most assuredly not your average trip to a Costco.

Edit: to stay on topic Yes there were lots of Prime cuts.
