Hey friscojosh welcome! I am in Missoula and I would second the idea of hitting up some orchards, especially this time of year. I know the Flathead Cheery orchards near Bigfork, MT basically give away cherry wood this time of year, but imagine there are some great fruit woods in your area too-

JoeSousa and I have been recently threatening to get together for a beverage and some conversation in the Spokane Cd'A area this year, so maybe we should have a mini-meetup?
