    I’ve run out of excuses….

As I sit here continuing to recover from retina reconstruction surgery, I realized the list of restrictions (no heavy lifting, no driving, no altitude/elevation changes, don’t raise your head, and no outdoor cooking!) has left me without a valid excuse for not posting an introduction, so I’m finally going to check that box.

I started grilling outdoors on a Weber kettle, shortly after getting married in 1995 (because it’s expected you grill something when you invite folks over in the summer, right?)…that transitioned me into low and slow smoking about 10 years later…with plenty of failures, of course, but as the years have gone by, and my equipment has been upgraded, I’ve been successful in racking up more wins than losses. Of course, the losses still occur.

The Weber Kettle for grilling/smoking is gone, gifted to a couple starting out; currently running a combination of a Kamado Joe Jr and Blaze Kamado for grilling. I was an early adopter of a (then) RECTEC pellet smoker, which served me well until I upgraded to an LSG pellet smoker for the majority of my low and slow cooks. Most recently, I fell into a brand-new Badger Barrel for only $99 dollars, which I thought was a pretty good deal, so I’ve been playing with that, too, primarily for whole bird cooks.

Do I consider myself a subject matter expert on any of this equipment or cooks of meats/sides? Well, when I stay in my comfort zone and repeatedly prep/cook the same thing under the same conditions, I can hold my own, but when I get a wild hair and step outside that comfort zone, I swing and miss….practice makes perfect and I keep at it until I’ve dialed it in….

Of course, not at the moment; my eye surgeon says this “break” will last until at least April 30th, and then we’ll reassess from there. Does that mean I’ll be racking up more posts? Could be, especially since having to keep my head down means my smart phone is getting a lot more use.

    Cheers!

Thank you; it was an honor to serve. So far, the badger has turned out some tasty birds. Maybe this summer I’ll expand out of my comfort zone and try some other meats!

Thank you. The toughest part is “behaving myself” so quick, speedy, and recovery can all stay together!

Welcome! I hope your recovery is without any hitches so that by April 30th, you'll be "you" again.

How do you like using that Badger Barrel? I swear I'd like to get one just because of the hilarious advertisements. You sure got a great deal on it.

Thanks, Midwest Economist , for the additional information. My PBC is over 10 years old and is still in great shape, but I'm always considering what I would do should I need to replace it in the future. I'm hooked on barrel cooking for some things, and the convenience of the 5 minute cleanup can't be beat. I use my kettle, kamado/kettle combo, and gasser as well, but the barrel has a solid place in my cooking lineup.

      K.

Just my personal opinion? I think you would find a transition from a PBC to a Badger Barrel as being a “downgrade.” Now, if you desire to barrel cook on the road, maybe a Badger as your traveler to supplement the PBC so you don’t have to lug the PBC, especially since the Badger breaks down for packing. Then again, you know what they say about opinions. While I’m in recupe, maybe I’ll convince my PBC buddy to come pickup my Badger Barrel, try it, and see what he thinks. Hmmm…..

Thanks! I did a 30-day military exercise at the Roswell airport back in 1996; great food and friendly people there!

Thanks, and that looks like a great cooker! My old RT-590 always turned out great food. The only issue I had was an overnight brisket cook; I thought I could fill the hopper and walk away. Well, the pellets fed so a cone shaped hole developed and the auger had nothing to feed, so the fire went out at 1am. Totally my fault for not evening the pellets out before bed! After talking to Chris at LSG about their pellet auger/hopper, I realized they designed it with me in mind, so I went LSG.

Thank you for your kindness! After my military retirement in 2006, I was asked to stay on as a DOD civilian, so I did…but Texas is on my short list when I retire for good!

Thanks for your encouragement! I remain forever blessed that this weird anomaly was repairable. I’m told many others who experienced this weren’t so fortunate: my heart goes out to them.
