Grilla OG Pellet Cooker 🦍
Grand Prize Weiner: Blaze 3 Burner LP Grill 🙂
I have only used a small LP infrared grill. So, I'll probably start out with another gas grill. Kettles are inexpensive enough that I could add one of those later if I choose. I dunno. I have an open mind.Originally posted by Steve B View PostWelcome aboard from NY.
Boy o’ Boy did you come to the wrong, er’ right place to spend your money. We here are probably the biggest enablers on the planet.
Strap in and enjoy the ride.
Any idea on what kind of cookers you’re interested in?
Thanks again, everybody. This looks like a nice place to stay for a while.

I was looking to add another cooker to my Weber Kettle with all the accessories, and after asking the Pit between 2 different smokers, a number of people suggested a third smoker that I had never considered. That's the one I bought, and I love it. Today, I hung a rack of beef ribs and a rack of pork ribs. They both were great. The Pit helped me make a great choice of a new smoker that complements my Weber (I did a tri tip on the kettle last night) It's great having 2 cookers to choose from.

It does help to how many you cook for. The type of grill you mentioned you had, do you enjoy smoked protein as I don't believe an IR is a match for smoking. And then there budget. Not to be too specific, say under X. These all things we've had to consider. We like to help and as said we do enjoy seeing other Pitmasters spend money. And as mentioned somewhere, Panhead John can be a pain in the neck but he's OK, even for a Texans fan. 😁

Welcome from the Bay Area (by way of the Central Coast). You've fallen in with a very friendly, supportive group. Probably one of the safest places on the internet.
There's also a ton of knowledge and experience here too...no matter what style of cooking or cooker you take an interest in.
(But since you're now in California, I do have an obligation to put in a plug for Central Coast Tri Tip...)

I have been reading about Santa Maria Tri Tip since there was a post on a Santa Maria grill that was recently purchased. I love learning new things. Sounds good to me.

I am not cooking for crowds, but I do want a quality cooker. Mostly, I am cooking for two, but I gave myself a generous budget in case I decided on gadgets. You know how that is. You buy something, and then you discover you need several extra things to make it work well or at all. I am likely to stay on the lower end of my budget. Up to $2K is o.k., and that can include accessories. I can go up to $3K, but it would have to be something I can't live without once I see it, which is unlikely. I don't want a flimsy built grill that will rust in a year. Right now, I am just starting to think about it, so I will probably change my mind a few times. I am not opposed to people suggesting more than one thing. I appreciate any help. Thanks
Panhead John You don't waste any time.
(That is a nice set-up.)

Welcome and thanks for your support! I too used to have one of the 2-burner Char-Broil infrareds. I loved it, except it had the heat retention of a mailbox and was trickier to use on windy cold days, of which there's about 7 months of, to varying degrees, where I live. But in decent weather it was an excellent grill. Not a good low & slow smoker by any stretch though.
Our free site has searchable gear reviews, which you can select price ranges, fuel type (charcoal, LP, pellet, etc) and primary use (grill, smoker, both). Then you can read any reviews we have of the various cookers that fall in those categories. You can get there from here: https://amazingribs.com/grill-and-smoker-search/

Huskee
Glad to be here.
Yeah, that little Char-Broil wouldn't stay lit on a windy day, and there are a lot of windy days in DFW. It performed well for burgers and sausage and stuff like that. I even cooked a pizza in it using a cast iron skillet. The emitter plates kept flame-ups contained, which was nice. The perforations got clogged easily, which was a mild pain to deal with. I would like an significant upgrade to that little grill.

Welcome to the Pit!
Sounds like you have a fun problem to solve in deciding on cookers.
Good Luck with that....
If I was startin from scratch I might lean towards a Santa Maria from Titan Outdoors
As mentioned , knowing what and how much you will cook really shapes the answer
Caveat Emptor...when I joined I had 2 cookers...I now have 5!
