    Roccbox vs. Uuni Pro

I'm planning on getting a dedicated pizza oven and have narrowed it down to the Roccbox and the Uuni Pro. They both look like solid ovens and I really like the multi-fuel capabilities. My thoughts on each are below. Anyone have any thoughts?
    • Roccbox
      • Love the size/weight/portability as I will be moving it in and out of the garage for use.
      • Love the silicon jacket as I have a gaggle of little kids
      • Unsure of the capability to use charcoal in the wood burner. Can it easily fit KBB in the chute? Could you add wood chunks on top of charcoal for wood smoke flavor?
      • Concerned about the size of the opening. Would an 11" max pie be too limiting? Is the opening tall enough to be able to bake bread or other things?
    • Uuni Pro
      • Love the easy fuel access. Can definitely use charcoal/wood combo.
      • If using pellets, is it a hog, or is the pellet consumption reasonable?
      • Like the wide/tall opening for putting in food
      • Is it easy to break down the chimney for moving/transporting it?
      • Concerned about the size/weight. Is it manageable enough for one person to carry out of the garage, around the house, and up a flight of stairs to the deck?
      • Concerned about the exterior of the oven getting too hot. Will it burn someone if they touch the exterior (those little kids)?
    Any thoughts would be appreciated!

EdF is Unni Pro man. He should be able to help you. I really like these, they are really cool! Let us know what you come up with.

I'll do the best I can here. My experience is limited (by weather and wussy-ness) at this point:
        • Uuni Pro
          • Love the easy fuel access. Can definitely use charcoal/wood combo.
          • If using pellets, is it a hog, or is the pellet consumption reasonable?
Ed: from what I've heard, it does eat the pellets up pretty quickly.
          • Like the wide/tall opening for putting in food
          • Is it easy to break down the chimney for moving/transporting it?
Ed: very simple - there's a clip at the bottom. Just undo it and lift it off.
          • Concerned about the size/weight. Is it manageable enough for one person to carry out of the garage, around the house, and up a flight of stairs to the deck?
Ed: the usual approach is just to remove the 4 stone parts separately. In fact, they recommend storing those inside anyway. Once they're out and the chimney is off, it's a pretty light piece of equipment.
          • Concerned about the exterior of the oven getting too hot. Will it burn someone if they touch the exterior (those little kids)?
Ed: I'd be exercising care in that department. Note, though, that the heat from the bottom is mild enough that you could put the thing on wood while cooking, without any issues. Not plastic though, eh?

EdF it'd be great to see you compare and contrast pizza making Uuni Pro vs BGE.

          Spring is Coming!

My comparison is likely to be verbal! I'm just expecting the Uuni to be so much easier.

I’m in the same boat, between these and a few others. I am now leaning toward the Pizza Party dual fuel model. It’s a little more $$$ than the Uuni though. There is lots of good info in the user forums at pizzamaking.com on all these choices.

Been a while since I've been over there, but it's a great site. Guess I need to check things out! Thanks!

EdF answered your Uuni questions the same as I would. In my experiences so far I’ve tried my Uuni Pro with pellets but it was windy and 5 degrees so it didn’t work well, but I think different conditions would be fine. Charcoal/Wood, now that’s my go to fuel and it is fantastic, looks really cool gets very hot and fast. Greatest pizzas, "we don’t like take out any more".
Best searing for SV steaks, my family raves how great they are and I’d put them up against any steakhouse in the country. I’ve sautéed onions, peppers mushrooms for cheese steaks in it. You can control smoke with internal vents. There is plenty of room to put in my 12” lodge cast iron fry pan and 2 of my small grill pans.
It comes with a really nice peel and must use leather gloves. Since I got it in the coldest part of winter it’s not had as much use as I’d like but I love using it, it’s really easy and fun. Go to the "Uuni has arrived" post to see mine and other users pics. As far as the Roccbox I have no experience. Hope this helps with your decision.

I’m waiting for uuni pro when the gas module is available. Its bigger, and I think in this case bigger is better or you will be kicking yourself. I was also thinking of blackstone pizza, but I like the idea of burning wood and throwing in a black iron pan.

I have an earlier version Uuni and a roccbox. The roccbox gas option is by far the simpler and easier to use and you can tell no difference between wood fired or propane fired. You can't use coal in the roccbox. It requires "kindling" of kiln dried hardwoods. Once I tried the propane option on the roccbox, I've never even bothered with the roccbox wood burner or the uuni. In my experiences with both models, by the time you get the oven heated up to pizza cooking temps (cook pizzas in 2 - 3 minutes), the burner will fill with ash and thus you'll start losing temp rather quickly, so you can only get a few pizzas cooked before you have to dump the burners and start over. The pro has a different wood burner design than my version, so this may not apply, so you'd need to check on that if it's a concern for you. Roccbox does get hot, but the silicon jacket is a nice counter measure. It won't allow you to pick up the oven with bare hands while it's hot, but it's much safer than the uuni exposed metal.

With the Uuni Pro ash build up is not an issue there is plenty of room for ash. Definitely looking forward to gas burner coming though

Cool that would save you the hassle. I’m excited to see how well it works however I do find it hard to imagine it being better than burning wood. There’s something about a real wood fire. 🔥

Not sure I was real clear but I was talking about cooking 15 or 20 pizzas at a time. How many pizzas have you tried cooking at one time on the pro?

Thanks for the thoughts all! EdFhogdog6 Dr ROK, thanks for your first hand accounts on the Uuni Pro and the Roccbox. Thanks to SierraBBQGuyRobertC for the links as well. A lot of good info there!

Dr ROK, do you ever feel limited by the size of the Roccbox? Do you ever find yourself wishing you could make larger pizzas?

Ultimately, I think the Uuni Pro is the right oven for me, but I'm trying to find reasons to go with with the Roccbox. I feel like the Uuni Pro has more features and flexibility, but the Roccbox is a lot more sexy...

sorensen_j , the opening on my roccbox is the same (or very close) as the one on my older version uuni, so no difference there for me. I purchased it to make "personal sized" pizzas for individual sales. That being said, folks have also bought one and split it. The pizzas I aim for are 9 - 10 inches in diameter, so it really depends on what you are looking for. When I have pizza parties, I just keep cooking them and cutting them up and everybody helps themselves. If I had to choose between the two, it'd be the roccbox for me. You may want to look at the roccbox facebook pages for additional info.

Well, I made a decision and placed an order last night! My capacity and fuel concerns with the Roccbox made me too hesitant to go that route, and the size and weight of the Uuni (and need to store it inside) made me hesitant there too. I decided to go to the board of directors (the wife) and seek additional funding. I ended up ordering a 70x70 Pizza Party with the glass door, the aluminum stand so it will be high enough to be above the reach of the little kids, and a cover so it can be left outside. Now for the hard part...waiting two weeks until it gets here!
