    Outdoor pizza ovens

Looking for an outdoor pizza oven something like the Ooni, definitely under 1k. Any thoughts based on your experiences?

    #2
I got a Gozney Roccbox with the wood attachment about a year ago and love it. Ooni looked great too, but in the end I wanted a gas oven with a wood attachment, as opposed to the other way around. Let me know if you have more questions!

Checked them out on line, looks good. I'm not sure about no door. We get lots of afternoon wind here living in a high altitude valley. Cpt Mike i assume you have one too.

I do Cap'n. Grozny talks about high wind and how to orient the opening downwind. I haven't had the experience of using it on a windy day, but I think it would have to be pretty windy, in which case I wouldn't want to be cooking with any open flame device.

If it was me I would wait for the release of the new Blackstone Pizza Oven. I have the original and it's been great.

I’m loving my Roccbox, but there are plenty of great choices. The hardest part for me was deciding if I really needed a 16" oven, but it’s so easy to cook multiple pizzas the size is a non-issue for me. This is the Detroit style I made last night. Click image for larger version

What temperature do you run a Detroit style pizza at? Presumably this style cooks at lower temps than a lot of other pizzas you might make?

jfmorris ~780°F. I used the recipe and method described by coreyo in his epic "Detroit Style Pizza Techniques", and it worked perfectly. It’s on page 4 at https://pitmaster.amazingribs.com/fo...chniques/page4

I've used an Ooni Koda 16 and a Solo Stove PI. They are both in the $600 price range and both are great. The Koda can do a larger pizza than the Solo Stove but I think the Solo will get a bit hotter and cooks ever so slightly better. So if you are ok with a 12 inch pizza go with the Solo but if you want to cook some larger pizzas you won't go wrong with the Koda.

I'm very pleased with my Ooni Koda 16, as mentioned, the extra working space gives you options for adjusting residence time and temp unless you're making 15+" pies.

If the idea of extra space, a front door, and multi-fuel then the newest Ooni, the Karu 16 is the ticket. With both burner types, and a cover, it will be close to the top of your desired price range, but a solid choice for quality and performance.

I had a significant customer service issue with Gozney early last year and wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire. Most people probably haven't had similar issues with them, but they made what should have been a simple fix into a complete cluster..........

Thanks. The cover is nice too as this would definitely be living outside. Glad to hear a good review.

Please tell your Gozney story, or maybe relate your pizza oven experiences in one of your epic review threads. People need to hear the good, the bad, AND the ugly.

Sid P, here's the write up on the Koda 16 I did about 2 years ago: Ooni Koda 16 commentary - Pitmaster Club (amazingribs.com)

As for my negative Gozney experience the detail would be boring and bitchy so I'll just condense it. They made promises and set expectations for availability and delivery of the Dome pizza oven. When the time came they chose instead to do a cattle call delivery rather than honor the sign up sequence. We had a back and forth email exchange where they kept saying they were sorry, but weren't interested in rectifying their choice. I spent most of my adult working life in sales and marketing both at a major corporate level and in my own businesses. One of my basic philosophies is "don't take your customers for granted". They basically told me, we don't care, we don't have to. Deal, we're done.

Thanks, Bob. It sounds ridiculous on their part, but I’m glad it’s not a "my oven fell apart and they said I must have used it incorrectly" type of story.

Thanks for the assist on this. I'm going to order the Kodi 16. I feel that it meets my specific needs. Need to speak to them about shipping as we have a bunch of camping trips coming up in Aug and Sept. Worst case is that i can't get it until October.

Thank you for this thread! I am finally biting the bullet, and I am going for the Roccbox. Let's compare notes in a couple of weeks.
