Not a KBQ owner (yet), but as I understand it the circulation fan only runs when it needs heat, right? So when it’s colder outside - and the fan needs to run more - the temp differences between top and bottom would be lower...yes?

If this knob position keeps your pit around 250F, make your custom calibration mark here:

I find the 188 setting the sweet spot on my KBQ. Towards the end of a cook I sometimes reduce it a bit.
Good idea on setting a calibration spot. I will try this!

Yeah that's right about the spot on my temp dial. Just a little bit to the right of 188.

I found that it takes a little while to even out the temp, I end up adjusting left and right a little early on, but once it gets dialed in, that setting gives me an average temp of 230ish.

          Thanks!

Heck, I don't really look at the dial. I set it the first time I used it and it stays set at around the 188* mark (which gives me 250* on the middle rack) and I just fine tune it based on what the XR-50 ambient probe shows and my desired temperature for a particular cook: I just turn it a little and check the temp change on the XR-50 and adjust more if needed.

As far as the OPs post - yes, the top thermometer on mine is 20-30* off the middle rack ambient temp. I rally don't use the top thermometer anymore.
