No, I was thinking more like BBQ_Bill's mod pictured here. He stoped selling them back in 2017 the best I can tell.

Ah...looks like that could be done with the handle spring and a 1/2" bolt of an appropriate length, some washers, and a couple nuts.

You can go to Home Depot and grab some 6 inch carriage bolts. You need some stainless nuts to tighten on both side of the door, but that is easy enough.

Sometimes we can become myopic about a modification and miss an equal, perhaps better, solution. I presume that part of what you want besides a heat resistant handle is the standoff of the lid appearing roughly flat out from the main body. In the above suggestions you'll be buying additional hardware, again presumably stainless steel for corrosion resistance, which will add up to a perhaps surprising cost total. You could mount them either horizontally or vertically, your preference, and you get both a heat resistant handle, and roughly the same amount of standoff from the ground when the door is lowered. It's all stainless material in one purchase, no chasing several bins of choices requiring more time and thought. Your call...

Good idea. If it wasn't raining I was going to get my KBQ door handles and measure them and list the parts. I think your option is an easier one.

Thanks Uncle Bob, I sincerely appreciate your input. The main advantage I see in the original approach is the use of existing bolt holes. The alternative you offered would require drilling an additional hole per side. Becoming myopic is a legitimate point and I am considering a 3rd option. A little more investigation will solidify my choice. Thanks again.
