I have the regular and the XL versions and use a 4lb hammer as well. The only time I have needed more force has been on logs that had a lot of knots and even then the 4 pounder usually did the job with a little more energy exertion...

On a related note, 2.2 million sledgehammers recalled: https://www.wral.com/story/2-2-milli...ries/20821004/

        I first bought a short-handled 3lber, but realized it wasn't enough so got a short-handled 4lber, and for me that's the ticket.

Why not just use a splitting axe? This is what I use. You can split a cord of dry wood in a couple hours.

The Kindling Cracker is a fantastic alternative to splitting with an axe, and safer. It also allows you to do more fine-tuned splitting easily, such as for kindling, without swinging a blade.

Agree with what Huskee said...when you get down to kindling size its hard to do with the axe. For taking large pieces to medium or small I use the splitting maul, and then the Kindling Cracker for the small into kindling.
