Late last year there was a thread on 2022 cooking resolutions that I believe was started by Troutman . In that thread I stated one of my 2022 resolutions was no new outdoor cookers. I honestly thought I would have no problems keeping this resolution (even though ya'll were laughing quite mightily) as I'm pretty happy with the arsenal on the patio. Now someday, I had planned on buying a KBQ, but it was not in any sort of immediate plans. Figured maybe I'd pick one up after the daughter went off to college and I figured out a place to keep firewood and such.
Well, low and behold a used one shows up in KC, MO about the same time I get a little bonus from work. Since it's less than a 3 hour drive and the cost was about half of getting a new one shipped to me, I didn't feel I could pass up the deal. Thinking about technicalities all of a sudden, it's not actually new...maybe I'm in the clear on the resolution thing? The guy I bought it from lives on the southern end of KC, However, you know they say it never hurts to ask, so I asked if he'd be willing to meet me on the north side of KC. He said he needed to an excuse to hit his favorite meat market in Liberty, so another score! Well...maybe not a good score...that hour to hour and a half of time savings cost me an extra $250 in meat waiting for him to arrive
.
Why would this action drive me away from the Pit? Well, since arranging details early in the week for the exchange, I've been reading through the giant "KBQ has landed" thread. I'm 67 of 115 pages through it and have come to a very sad conclusion. Once you buy a KBQ, you apparently need to do one of the following:
A. Be promoted to management
B. Copyright your photos and become secretive about details
C. Let your membership expire because you're too good for this place once you get the KBQ down
I'm going to work very hard not to let my ego grow to PHJ proportions so I can buck the trend. Even though this dang place is the reason I drove to KC and bought one, I still love you all.
Anyway, it was a great uneventful trip. I left at 9:00 AM this morning, made a 332 mile round trip and was back by 2:30 PM. On the way down I listened to the old 2015 BBQ Central Episode with Bill Karu. The meat market we met at was The Upper Cut in Liberty, MO. They are an Akaushi Ranch and market. I picked up some trip-tips, filets, sausages, hot dogs, and maybe something else you'll see a little later today if the wind dies down like it's supposed to. On the way back I listened to the Mr. Bones Pitcast episode. Man did I enjoy listening to Mr. Bones, it makes me miss him even more. Why did these Pitcast episodes end?
Anyway, here's the new smoker freshly unloaded from the car.
