    My first smoker

Wow, I really didn't know what I was doing years ago. I made a pit barrel smoker before I knew what a pit barrel smoker was. Hey, it made some great shoulders. It just goes to show you that all you need is good smoke, good friends, and time. You can smoke on just about anything. My latest build is a reverse flow I mounted on a small trailer. It is time to do a little TLC on it and repaint.

I'll see if I can get you some more pics. My project over the next week or so is to give it a good steam clean and do some maintenance. It needs a new handle on the firebox and a new paintjob. It's about four years old now and going strong.

That is quality work. First thing I noticed is the framing on the doors to keep balance and smoke in. Well done.

tbob4 Thank you. It was a labor of love. If I had the time to build another I would space the racks differently so I could get three of them in there and I would insulate the fire box. The heavy gage steel holds a really steady temp and there are no smoke leaks, it just needs a little tweaking in the design and an insulated box.

I like how it looks of an old wood stove. Great job!

MartinNC what did you use as a guide to plan the fire box, cook chamber, and smoke stack size?

I didn’t actually. Other than doing some reading on how air flows in a reverse flow setup. I calculated the volume of air around the baffle plate and made the chimney half of that for a good draw. The original stack was about nine inches taller but the draw was too quick. It pulled the smoke out too fast. The grease drain should come out of the side rather than the bottom because it is level. Some small improvements would perfect it and make it a great mid size trailer smoker.

like that you thought to add the rings on top for removal and such.

I like how you use a black towel so no one knows it’s on the cooker and you didn’t wash it.

Lol, that is actually one of the gloves I use to open the firebox. It had gotten wet and I had it up there to dry out.
