There's an episode of BBQ with Franklin where he builds one and goes through it step by step. You might be able to find it on YouTube

Aaron uses propane tanks. Not sure about using an old fuel or oil tank.

Juddlight , my memory may be faulty, but I thought this came up before and that Max Good strongly recommended against this. Something that the petrochemicals can not be removed from the pores of the metal, making this unsafe. Again, I may be remembering this wrong, so you might want to check with him.

You are right. It was some type of chemical tank a guy wanted to use.

I have seen fuel oil tanks converted to smokers and hog roasters. Do a image search on home built smokers and you will find pictures. There's a guy that lives around me that has a trailer mounted unit that looks sweet. I think fuel oil tanks are o.k. if properly burned out and cleaned. When you start using tanks or barrels that held pesticides or other caustic chemicals you may have an issue. Probably a good idea to research it though.

Jerod is correct. One of our members wanted to use a barrel that had contained Methyl Ethyl Keytone to make a drum smoker. MEK is super nasty.

Danjohnston949 I'll sing your praises in a minute (because you turned me into a puddle tonight but I'll get into that later...I owe you so much!) but I'd like to tell Max Good what I've experienced with the grill itself. I've consistently set the grill temp. at 225 and tried a 17lb brisket my first time out. (I know, not real smart for a rookie when I didn't even hardly season the pretty thing...) but I killed an already dead cow. I managed to salvage the beast by slicing and steaming it on the stove top for lunches during harvest. Keep in mind- until now- have never owned a cordless thermometer and only trusted the digital reading. I just seemed to annihilate everything I put on the darn thing. I love the grill but another thing you should know, I've never cleaned the grates, only the pellet hopper because I was told that there's where the flavor lies. I took Meathead's advise and made my own binder recording wind speed, ambient temp, humidity, barometric pressure (I like to go fishing too ) along with cloud cover hourly. I also only use pellets designed for this grill that are sold locally and one of the owners of said establishment uses one too (same kind of grill), wins a lot, but is vague with tips. I don't hold that against him. That's all I can tell you about the grill. Thanks for responding to Danjohnston949 and wanting to learn more. I sure appreciate it.

PS. I had cooked that brisket for 13 hrs. Do think it was just on too long?
