A 4" pipe, 2 feet long will get the job done. Let us know how the build progresses. We want photos

Thanks mate, this will be an ongoing project that will take some time. The more I look into the design, the more I need to learn but having a go at it is what it is about. I'll be posting pics as I go, otherwise it didn't happen haha

Personally I would make it a compact design where the firebox is directly underneath and is still reverse flow. Included is a pic of one of my models to give you an idea.. Make the stack 5" and 7-800 mm above the height of the it. Mount the stack in the end cap of the tank, not above the food as it will drip grease. Easy way of doing this is mount in top of end cap, then just use sheet metal tacked to the back side of the right hand guides to deflect the airflow down under the grates then out the stack.

More great ideas Ahumadora, thanks mate, love the idea of using sheet metal to direct air flow. One quick question about this design, is the throat of the fire box still in the end of it or out of the top somehow?

If you are running another reverse flow late above the fire box you can make holes in the end or to of the firebox. More open is better... you do not want a restriction at this point, so err on the side of larger opening.

    Well looky here, gunna’s dunnit!!!
It took 18 months of procrastination but I am over the moon with the results. This thing is crazy stable once it’s up to temp and now I have sealed up the door properly, it averages < 15°F difference from end to end.

I have thrown together a few pics of the build and yes, I accept now that I should leave welding to the professionals. Many grinding wheels were sacrificed on this project. Whatev’s, it’s how it cooks that counts isn’t it? Now I just have to master this sucker, it’s certainly off to a promising start

Red doodle marks the exact point where my 5” grinder gearbox seized while making the first cuts for the firebox. Fortunately, my son’s flat-mate is the proud owner of a plasma torch, which made short work of the rest of the cutting for me. He did a very neat job of this cut as well as the door and chimney. I would later find that the firebox would not fit into the carefully marked out aperture. Seems I have trouble transposing a square onto a domed cylinder haha.

The sheer weight of this thing meant it wasn’t going back to see Plasma Man for more work. It took several beers, but later on a solution appeared in an apparition. Cut a hole in the top of the firebox and use the offcut to act as a heat diffuser. This would reduce the hot spot under the reverse flow plate. Bloody genius!! I normally stop working once I open the beer fridge, but then I become a real ideas man!!

A surprisingly unsuccessful YouTube tip for bending doors that have sprung when cut. Don't bother trying this at home kids, unless you have a better car jack than this toy

First of two red hot burn offs, made sure it was a nice breezy day.

The result of the burns, the thick coat of hi-temp black paint now hides a multitude of sins.

After a practice run with chicken and cheap sausages it’s time for the first proper cook. Beef cheeks and a small brisket.
Thanks for all the input people, would not have happened without your help. Oops, nearly forgot to mention that the local wood supplier has splits between 11" & 13" so they fit nicely, FYI jfmorris
