Griddle maintenance: “waxed” my Pit Boss

I really should cover my stuff; I have the covers, after all. But during the summer it’s a PITA to deal with them, and during the winter mold can build up in the Weber and the BGE, and until this last season I’ve used the griddle year round.

The Weber and the BGE can take it, never worse for the wear. But the Pit Boss has a matte finish that fades and that also holds oils, and it looks like hell after a while.

Back in the day I was something of a car detailing fanatic. I found the work very methodical and relaxing! Paint is paint, and there’s no reason that restoring some oils to a finish wouldn’t rejuvenate it.

I broke a whole lot of car detailing rules here. I worked in direct sunlight. I didn’t clean the surface first. I was generally careless; it’s a grill, not a show car, and it’s going to get beat up again. All I want is for it to look okay on the deck. I spent all of about 10 minutes on this. If I get a wild hair, maybe I’ll go get some polishes and compounds and the Porter Cable random out. But probably not.

I used an older cleaner wax, Meguiar’s ColorX. I don’t even know if they make it any more!

This makes me feel good about keeping mine in the garage. 😁😂😂

I’ve been reading a little on wax and ceramic…I have a project tomorrow - gonna wax the pontoons on the new boat. But would ceramic coating provide better protection for that? Just curious, either way, looks good!

And I’m guessing no ceramic due to the cost, but will be curious to see how that works out over a few months for you.

Naw, I just used whatever old cleaner wax I already had. Ceramics have revolutionized car care. I actually beta tested one of the very first consumer ceramics, it was probably 20+ years ago? I couldn’t believe it. Folks were debating carnauba vs synthetic, and here was this stuff that you basically clay barred your car and sprayed it on, then wiped. Nobody believed it.

(Cont’d) I’m not doing it for protection. It just looked like hell. When it gets like that again, I'll do it again.

Cover everything especially here. Never though to wax the bbq stuff. Looks great, nice to be retired.
