I “Waxed” my Pit Boss Sierra

    No, not the griddle top.

I used a heavy duty degreaser on it last fall… don’t do that. You can see why just from the photos. That matte finish was very unhappy. Always test the surface first, don’t be an idiot (like some of us).

Because it was late October and the weather was turning, I couldn’t address it until now. This was the first try; I wanted to use something very gentle, so I used some Meguiar’s ColorX, which is a cleaner wax: a mild abrasive, some fillers, some protection. I applied with a Porter Cable 7424, but that was just for speed. You detail people: no, I didn’t treat it like my car. I didn’t clean it off first, I used old applicators and a pad that I was going to toss and towels that have seen the garage floor. It’s a grill, not a Porsche. This was just a proof of concept effort.

It did a decent job I think. I have some stuff that will put the oil back into the paint, next time around I’ll get to that.

The before photo is ugly. Like I said, heavy duty degreaser. That’s actually the name of it on the jug.

But it came out pretty decent. Next time the weather gets warmer I’ll make it really nice.

Have you tried the Dawn Spray? I use it on my Pit Boss occasionally. Works well and leaves the finish like new. Works good on the kettle too.

I love this stuff. Last night I made M&C, but I put it in the oven too early, so I thought I'd just put the lid on it to keep from drying out. Big mistake - it boiled over and then carbonized on the outside of the Corningware. I filled it with water after supper and let it sit overnight. This morning I used a razor scraper to get as much as I could off. Then I sprayed what was left with Powerwash and let it sit. I was able to get the rest off with a scrubbing pad - sprayed & wiped twice.

Uh... can you tell me what degreaser you used, so I can avoid it on my grills? Was it Gunk Engine Bright engine degreaser from the auto parts store by chance?

Super degreaser, not heavy duty. I’m not sure which is more degreasier, super or heavy duty.

Hey Tom, do you keep your griddle on the deck? If so, has it faded a little from the sun and weather? I don’t know how much you want to mess with it, it is just a cooker as you mentioned. But, if you’d like to restore it back to its original glamour, this might be worth a shot. It’s called Aerospace 303 UV Protectant. I’ve used it on my truck in the past and works well. It helps with fading from the sun and makes the plastic/rubber parts come back to life, don’t see why it wouldn’t work on the griddle exterior. I have not used it on mine as it’s kept in the garage and hasn’t faded. It might be worth checking out if ya want.

303 is good stuff. I used to do a lot of detailing as a hobby, I have detailing supplies like we also have cabinets full of rubs and sauces. I probably have some of that in the garage. I still need to take a little of the oxidation off, then hit it with something to restore the color a bit. Then I’ll seal it.
