New Rectec SmokeStone 600 Pellet Griddle

SmokeStone 600 Pellet Grill | recteq

Just saw this new, wood fired griddle from Rectec.

    FYI

Maybe someone can explain this, but I don’t get it. Normally you want low and slow with for smoking w/ pellets. This uses pellets for heating a griddle that’s typically used for hot fast cooking. Smoke shouldn’t be much of a factor especially with the solid griddle.

Yeah, can't imagine much smoke getting through the griddle, nor needing smoke on my eggs.

I think the smoke and griddle verbiage has to be nothing but marketing. I agree that smoking and a griddle just does not work. However, heating the griddle with pellets could make sense. It will probably heat fairly quick. In looking at this griddle, I would be concerned with the hopper on the front. Many times when cooking on the griddle I am standing fairly close depending upon what I am cooking. Overall, I am surprised it took this long for a pellet griddle to be released.

I don’t think you need worry about smokyy eggs. We are talking about a pellet powered griddle. Pellets at much lower temperatures don’t put much smoke on food. At griddle temps, you aren’t going to be getting very much smoke.

For a griddle, it would seem like propane or gas would be a far superior heat source for hot and fast cooking where smoke is not really required. Charcoal would have the disadvantage of longer startup times.

The only reason I’d consider this one would be if the temps were truely far more consistent via the electronic control but they would mean multiple thermostats for every heat source, I am guessing. It is not clear if that’s what they have done or even if the design would work better than the Weber smart gas control ones I think. I don’t think Weber has a smart griddle yet so maybe there is a niche at $999. But, this could probably be achieved better by adding a Weber griddle accessory to the gas grill.

Back when I had a Recteq 590 I got a Griddle Hack accessory to play with. It worked reasonably well for a hack, and no, smoke wasn't much of an add to the flavor profile as most griddle cooking is fast/short time frame. Temp control was in a somewhat narrow range, it worked best with the controller set in a 350-400 range, though the surface temp was higher. It was fun to play with but was also a compromise that required thinking outside the box. A purpose built unit like they are offering now may have some advantages, but time will tell. I suspect it's a limited market niche.

Brainstorming by Rectec execs late one night at a local bar:

CEO - "We need to increase sales. Anyone have any ideas?"
EXEC 1 - "Maybe we could add more colors."
CEO - "We have lots of colors now."

EXEC 2 - "How about making a gigantic pellet cooker?"
            EXEC - "Naw."

EXEC 3 - "How about a pellet griddle?"
CEO - "Now yur talkin'. Get on it!"

CEO - "The next round is on me!"

I’m a Recteq pellet smoker owner and love it. This kind of puzzled me. Didn’t expect pellet technology to be adapted to griddle cooking. I have a propane fired griddle and that seems to be the perfect way to do it. But heck. What do I know. Time will tell and maybe it’ll be the next big thing. 🤷‍♂️

I have a Steele made griddle insert that I technically could put in my Silverbac. Seems like a waste of pellets though 🧐. No thanks.

My thoughts too, about any pellet grill. But if space is limited, never mind.

The biggest problem with this is that a gas griddle is a perfect companion to a pellet grill. Some pellet owners have generators, some don't and for those that don't a gas cooker of some kind is a great friend to a pellet griller without power.

But RT's branding is heavy handed, and the mafia is in lock step.. it'll sell

I don’t own a pellet grill myself and probably never will…..…I’m sure they’re great and produce good food. [I’m retired and have plenty of time to tend a smoker] But….I just can’t see why anyone would want this. Why go through the hassle, expense and time required of loading pellets into a 1 trick pony? Not to mention needing electricity and possible electronics failures along the way. This just doesn’t make sense to me. I’m with all the others….I don’t need smoke on my breakfast, stir frys or whatever. A good ol’ stand alone gas griddle is just better in every way. I think they were trying make a product for a non existent problem…….and I’m with RonB ….was there 🥃 involved with their decision?
