    Traeger Flatrock maiden voyage

Replaced our 36" Blackstone with the new and pricey Traeger Flatrock. So any positives and negatives are solely in comparison to that. Also, I ordered it from Ace. They offer free delivery and assembly to which my back was grateful for. So I can't speak to that part of it.

    Likes:
Hinged lid fits nicely. Clam shell type that completely encapsulates the cooktop.
Very sturdy. Side shelves are rated at 50lbs.
Side shelves are huge and fold down.
    Even heat throughout cooktop.
Indicator lights above the knobs that light up when the burners are lit. You don't have to try and get an awkward visual.
    All 4 casters swivel.

    Dislikes:
Lid does not lift up a full 90 degrees. In my case it creates a fairly wide shadow (see pic below).
Large handle slots in the side walls of the cooktop. The wife likes to use the sidewalls to gather up food. Allows oil to escape much more easily.
No convenient or built in way to level the cooktop. Mine sits on pavers. Had to shim the casters.
Propane tank bracket slides forward and aft. Once the tank is mounted against the curved portion, the side of the bracket wants to pop out of location.
The LEDs for measuring the tank weight are way too bright. Nitpicking here as once you start cooking you don't even notice them.
Location of the power switch and 9V battery are on the very back. If you don't have the space to be able to get all the way around the grill, it would be difficult for most to reach. I can reach it, but only after everything has cooled.

    Note:
You don't have to plug it in to use. If you install a 9V battery, that will power the igniter only. After calibrating the tank weight, I did power off the switch and turn it back on. It did remember the tank calibration. This was done before I installed the battery.

On to the results. First was breakfast burritos and then smashburgers. I must apologize though. I didn't get a money shot of the bacon. That was the first thing that went on. I have no excuse as the wife did all of that cook. I just stupidly gawked and drooled. A real knuckle dragging, mouth breathing moment. A whole pack of glorious bacon!

Everything combined: Bacon, hash browns, chorizo and eggs.

    And of course, cheese.

Overall we're very happy with this griddle. Super well built and fantastic performance. Is it overpriced? Probably, but compared to my Blackstone it's 5x the grill. If anyone has any questions or would like more particulars I'd be happy to oblige.

Nice writeup and good looking cooks too! Thanks for doing this, I’m sure it’ll be helpful for some folks that might be deciding on a new griddle.

Nice looking cooks! The flatrock is at the top of a short list of griddles I hope to add to the cooking lineup this week. Out of curiosity, about how long did it take you to assemble it?

He mentioned that Ace Hardware assembled and delivered it for him. Is the Pit Boss on your list?

Thanks Panhead John ! I definitely scanned past that sentence and allowed my eyes to go straight to the likes and dislikes. Ive looked at the PB online but haven’t been able to see one locally.

If you have any questions about it, I’d be more than happy to help you out. I’ve got the 2 burner and love it! Several members here have a Pit Boss and they are very happy with theirs also. No rust worries and a breeze to clean up. I wasn’t able to see one locally either, ordered mine from Amazon.

If you think it's a keeper, might be worth having a friend weld in the sides of the handles and maybe welding on a different way to lift it off if necessary? That's the dumb sorta stuff I think of to waste money instead of just doing the easy thing and learning to live with it

That's just one of those little things you don't think about until it's in action. All cookers probably have little things that you wish weren't so when you get deep enough into the weeds. Especially when you go through multiple cookers over a period of time. If this was my first, I'd have nothing to measure it against.

Very nice. It not a surprise that so many are getting into the flat top world. This is a good looking griddle. I also think that Weber’s looks good as well.

That was great. My 12 year old son wants a griddle so he can make breakfast and my wife gave me the green light. I’m a little on the fence myself but this was very helpful.

Buying my griddle was probably my favorite purchase in years. You’ll love it!

For some additional insight you can go to YouTube and look up vids by my buddy "The Flat Top King". Neal got one of these a while back and likes it for the most part. His list of pros and cons is similar to this report.

Looking through some of the comments those handle holes and the more central location of the grease hole are the two most common complaints. Some have gone to using folded foil to block the hand holes or make it a habit to use two spatulas, one to block the "goal posts". Probably won't be long before someone on Etsy will sell some formed stainless clip on shields for that purpose.
