Blackstone griddle wind modification - do you need a set of baffles for your 36"?

I did mine a couple of weeks ago with some angle aluminum I cut to length and put under my flat top on 3 sides.

Going to be doing the same with a friend of mine's griddle probably this weekend? Maybe next?

Anyways, he's got a nice setup in his shop, drill press, etc., and he's a pretty competent mechanic/psuedo-machinist. I think we could make up 10 sets of wind blockers in no time, if anyone wants a set, we could do them at the same time and mail them out to you.

I THINK the newer model Blackstone 36"ers are all pretty much the same dimensions at the spots we'll be attaching, so if someone here wants some, I think we could accommodate a few pairs.

Of course, the caveat is, these will be cut and drilled to match HIS griddle, and you use these at your own risk. I think we are all adults here and know that there is risk when modifying your equipment, so you need to do the research on your own and accept the risk yourself before you put these on. Beyond that, I'm not trying to make a profit off any of this, just thought some guys don't have the tools or time to do this themselves and might benefit from a cheap set of aluminum baffles to put on. I would think cost of materials and postage, maybe a couple bucks for my friend if he requires it.

Please reply here if you're interested and I'll try to keep a running log. No guarantees, but I don't think he'll mind.

Me-me-me! But I do have a complicating factor in that my griddle is the Pro Series sold at Walmart that has the hinged hood. The standard wind guards that I see would need some modification due to the hinges being attached to the sides of the griddle top. But I'm thinking I could take a Dremel tool to them and make it work, if necessary.

Any chance you could include a pic of yours with the wind guards attached? I promise not to judge if it isn't spotlessly cleaned up or whatever.

Yeah my griddle is never spotless. Hell, none of my cookers are. They're meant to be used! lol

My friend's griddle IS the Pro version from WalMart. His will be exactly like yours, and these are 1" and 3/4" angled aluminum that mount permanently UNDER your flat top, not hanging off the sides. No interference with the various types of lids.

Thanks. That's exactly what I am needing. More so for the sides, as the wind is more of a factor with the way mine is oriented. Plus, things on my side shelves catch a LOT of heat because they are at the same height as the frame below the griddle surface.

And for aaaaaaaallllll you bastages who are judging my griddle cleanliness....

Here is what it looked like when I was finished with the windguards and a quick 2-3 coats of reseasoning and finishing up with a batch of onions. No stripping the seasoning here, ain't nobody got time for that!

I’d thought about getting a set of these but was thinking that with most of the heat coming out the front doesn’t it get a little warm standing in front of that thing?

Not really. I did notice it once, I had a set of hang-down baffles I made out of some heavy aluminum disposable cookie sheets. These worked great to keep heat off my side shelves (even better than these permanent baffles), but they did interfere a little with my hood and ended up getting bent up and I've now thrown them away.

I think during that cook, I had a smidge of wind coming in the back which was blowing ALL the heat into my belly and *ahem* associated regions. That was super duper hot. However, I think most of it was from that wind pushing it out at me.

When I heated it up the other day, I got it up over 700ºF and with no wind to speak of, and now that I also have a windguard in the back, I didn't find it uncomfortable to stand in front of at all - reaching OVER a 700º griddle to move things around was a bit hot, but you'll never be cooking at that temp.

Well I guess that answers that question. Thanks!

Edit: now that I look at the pics you posted of the angle stock it’s not like it buts directly up to the cool surface so it would seem it still allows heat to come out and go straight up while also blocking the wind coming horizontally.

Yeah I wasn't able to get it tucked underneath the way I wanted, though we'll do some more accurate measurements and cutting with my friend's, as his tools and shop are much more capable than mine - not to mention HE is much more capable than me. So I may even make a new set for myself off his templates.

Sounds good! I have a 36" that came from Ace. It would be awesome to have deflectors that allow me to put some things on the shelves next to the flattop. I've asked some buddies of mine to make up some for me but they haven't yet, that's been over a year ago. 🤣

I am in for a set if you please. I am putting a custom flattop together using a N/G grill that has cannibalized itself.

Are you using the Blackstone as the base? What I'm looking at doing is making up several sets of the windbreaks that are identical to my friend's Blackstone Pro 36", essentially because we can knock out a few identical pairs at once, not doing multiple runs at a later date, or different dimensions, etc. It's just a convenience thing.

It has reduced the heat on my side tables by a good 75%. Not QUITE as good as the bigger over-the-lip shields I had made before, but definitely a significant improvement.

I have the 28" Pro-series with the hinged top. I bought these on Amazon and they work great. I had to do a little fabricating around the hinge, but I no longer hear the flame getting wiped around on windy days. Plus they seem to assist with the heat transfer all the way out to the edge of the flat top. Also helps prevent the excessive heat coming out onto the side tables.

Those are similar to what I made originally - but they have to be cleaned periodically - not a big deal, throw them in the dishwasher - but I'd read stories of warping and the pain flaking off (those look like alum?), etc. I just decided to add these and they work great, and I still have the ability to add an over-the-lip set like yours later too, if I want, for extra heat reduction. My shelves also don't have that cutout, so they would be too tall and require more fab in my case I think.

I believe we may make these this afternoon, or possibly tomorrow (Saturday the 22nd), so let me know if you want a set. I'll count up those above this post who have already spoken up.

I bought about $200 worth of angle aluminum to make about 9 sets as near as I could tell - unfortunately, it turned out his griddle (bring the Pro) model, was quit a bit different than mine, and that began to make me question how many changes have been made from season to season and year to year and the various models, so I decided not to do these. Sorry folks, I just don't want to make up a set and send them out to people and then have them find out they aren't going to work right. I think they need to be custom measured for each griddle and the various 'carts' they sit on... sorry
